Chapter One

June 2000

The air was warm and the sun shone bright as the final bell rang. Summer vacation had officially arrived and Junior year was finally over with. Kaity jumped out of her seat and bolted for the door.

“Hey Kaity wait up!” her one of her best friends, Emily called. Kaity reached her locker and grabbed her bag as Emily caught up to her and opened the locker next to Kaity’s.

“Why are you in such a hurry, chica??”

“Summer! I love it, and now I can go chill with my Nicky!” Kaity said cheerfully. Nick was her other best friend, who she kind of sort of liked, but never admitted it to anyone. She rarely saw him because he happened to be in a music group, the Backstreet Boys, who, to say the least, had made it BIG. So, Nick was often off touring foreign countries while Kaity was in school. Now that it was summer, she had two weeks to spend time with Nick, before he left for yet another tour of the US.

“Nicky huh? You know he hates being called that.” Emily said.

“Why do you think I do it, it pisses the hell outta him!” Kaity said slamming her empty locker, “Let’s go!” she finished by dragging Emily out of their high school, Ruskin High. They climbed into Kaity’s midnight blue Mustang convertible and Kaity turned the ignition. She dug in her CD case and retrieved the CD that Nick had made for her. It was him singing all of her favorite songs and slid it into her CD player. Within seconds the sound of him singing ‘If You Want It To Be Good Girl Get Yourself A Bad Boy’ filled the air of the school parking lot as Kaity sped through it. She pulled into Emily’s driveway minutes later and her best friend got out.

“Wanna go shopping tonight? My mom and I are going nuts at the Gallaria!! You can join..?” Emily asked.

“Nah, if you don’t mind, I’ll take a rain check. I kind of want to veg out tonight in front of the TV.”

“No prob, babe! I’ll see ya tomorrow. Mind if I walk over?”

“Not at all. Adios!”

“See ya!” Emily finished as Kaity pulled out of her driveway and sped home. Emily walked up the front steps and in the front door.

“MMMMOOOOMMMM!!!” she yelled.

“Hi Emily, how was school?” Her mother asked as she walked into the living room where Emily had dropped her book bag.

“Great! Done for the summer! So, when are we going shopping?”

“As soon as you’re ready. Oh, by the way, some boy named Brian called about twenty minutes ago. He said to call him back when you got home.”

“Brian...Brian Littrell??” she asked. She wanted to make sure she had the right Brian...the ‘ohmigod beautiful’ Backstreet Boy she had loved for almost a year.

“Yes, I think that was his name.”

“I gotta go!” Emily said jumping up from the couch and running up the stairs. She entered her room and walked over to the mirror. She looked at the reflection. “Breathe Emily, be calm.” As she reached for the phone, she glanced at her Brian poster that hung next to her bed. She gazed into his sparkling blue eyes “I love you” she thought, before dialing the number she knew by heart. It rang three times before the answering machine picked up...

“Hey-Hey this is B-Rok and I’m out chillin with my boys, leave me a message and I’ll check ya later!!” Emily hung up the phone before leaving a message but automatically picked it up again and dialed Nick’s phone number.
