Prologue
August 1988
"One of these days those two are going to realize it." Jane Carter said over the phone.
"Oh I know, Jane, they are so adorable together. It amazes me that they became so close so fast. We've only been in Florida for a week and a half and they are already best friends." Carol McKenzie responded as she watched her six year old daughter playing outside with their new neighbor.
"I'm glad they got to know eachother. Nick doesn't have many friends at school. That, I have to say, is my fault. I keep picking him up so early, but he has auditions that can't be rescheduled. I was about to tell him to take a break. He needs to be a normal eight year old kid with friends."
"I know. I wasn't sure if picking up and moving from New York was such a good idea, especially since Kaity had so many friends and was into everything. I was nervous she wouldn't make friends easily."
"She'll do just fine. She is so talkative. Whenever she is over here she sits down and talks my ear off. I just love kids that can do that."
"Nick's a good kid too. He is so talented. I think that he'll be good for Kaity even though he's a few years older than her. She'll look up to him."
"I can't wait to see what happens when they become teenagers. I am absolutly sure that those two will hook up."
"Wouldn't that be great? Having my daughter date my best friend's son!"
"Wonderful. I can actually picture those two married and with a family. We'd be semi-related!"
"As much fun as it is, let's not get ahead of ourselves. They are about twenty years away from a step like that!" Carol said laughing. "Oh isn't that adorable?! Jane go to the window and look back at the pool." Jane quickly ran from the livingroom to the kitchen to look out the window. Nick and Kaity were in the water and Nick was patiently teaching Kaity to swim in the shallow end. He was standing next to her, holding her up as she floated on her stomach, but carefully slid his hands away, unbeknownest to Kaity, and she slowly floated away. Seconds later she planted her feet to stand up when she realized that Nick was not holding her up. She glanced around the pool and found him sitting on the edge with his feet in the water, smiling at her. She started to bounce over to him smiling as he got back into the water. Kaity grabbed him and hugged him as the two of them laughed together.
"Awww. Carol, I am so glad that you and your family moved down here."
"Me too Jane, me too."
