Tamahome's this super cool guy who goes around saving people for money. Then he meets Miaka and slowly (and probably quite painfully) turns into a lump of clay. But seriously, he's a really really cool guy who is really attached to his family.... he was really cool until he met miaka and a part of him (the cool part, really) died.
Tamahome is the eldest son of the Sou family. His mother died after giving birth to the youngest of Tama's sibling, Yuiren, and with a sick father, Tamahome takes very good care of all his living family. He goes to Kounan's capital (forget the city's name) to get money for his family, this is when he and Miaka meet (ie, when Tamahome saves her from slave traders, a gang, and the emperor's guards).
Although one doesn't get the idea that poor Tamahome was all that impressed with Miaka when they first met. Miaka just won't let him be (thinking he stole Yui... who would steal Yui? .....*most likely gets whacked by meg... if meg were here*) and they eventually end up being held prison together. The more time he and Miaka spead together, he seems to show he has more and more feelings for her (we already knew Miaka did). Finally, after much 'i don't feel the same way' and 'i'm sick so i'm going home', he finally admits that he loves her.
while one could get into details of everything that happened with tama after that, it would be quite boring. Seriously, the second he fell in love with Miaka, he wasn't really Tamahome anymore, just this guy hopelessly devoted to his girlfriend and miko, and his cool personality, very quickly fades. There's a lot of 'i can't love you anymore' 'i can't marry you anmore', 'nakago turned me into an evil (yet rather rad) bastard, let me break that arm for you', 'my master said i can't love you so... i want Xi Fang'... you get the idea. Although, in the end, Miaka and Tamahome's love triumphs over the laws of heaven (and the laws of physics).
