Chapter 11
And when I wake up to
The touch of your head on my shoulder
You're my dream come true, oh yeah
No One Else Comes Close
Since almost everyone was asleep, they didn't mind. But not Nick.
After a few minutes, "Ok, that's it" said Nick. He stood up, took his sleeping bag and walked outside.
I sighed and picked up my own sleeping bag and went after him.
"I'm sleeping outside. I need some rest." Nick said as he arranged his sleeping bag flat on the ground.
I did the same and lay down in it, trying to be comfortable.
We faced the sky.
"It's a beautiful night, huh?" I observed.
"It is," I agreed.
We just lay there in silence.
The wind blew and it was a chilly breeze. Nick happened to look over when I shivered.
"You cold? Come here" he motioned for me to join him in his sleeping bag.
I raised my eyebrows at him.
"Don't worry, I won't try anything. After all, the guys are only a few feet away."
I took my little pillow and shimmied in beside him.
"Comfy?" he asked as he put his arms around me.
I nodded.
"Look, at that star. We should make that our star." he said, while pointing up.
"Well, it's our night" I remarked. He leaned over and gave me a light kiss.
"Cathy?"
"Hmmm" I mumbled as I closed my eyes and fell asleep.
"I...nevermind".
The sun was shining overhead, when I opened my eyes. I could hear the sound of birds chirping and bustling activity around me.
Beside me, Nick started to open his eyes too.
"Morning, sleepyhead" I whispered. He smiled, then closed his eyes again.
"Time to get up everyone" I heard Angela's voice cry out. She was already arranging her stuff outside of the tent.
Nick grumbled and turned on his side.
Angela eyed me with a mischeivous look in her eyes. "So what were you two guys doing last nieht?"
"Nothing."
"Yeah right."
I got up and folded up my sleeping bag. Nick stretched out his arms and got up too.
I peeked inside the tent to see Sam and Kevin , who had just awakened.
"I can't believe that girl is so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed so early in the morning" she told me, eyeing Angela, "She's even worse than you." She got up and began collecting her things.
"Nice hair, Kev" I remarked. He ran his hand through his unruly mane.
"Here" Sam tossed him her brush,"You need it".
Nick was already awake when I got outside again. "I'm hungry" he told me.
"Well, we'll eat breakfast as soon as everyone has packed up all of their stuff." announced Angela, who was by the stream, washing her face.
Nick and Kevin took down their tent and I placed all of our bags in a pile.
"That's weird" muttered Howie to himself.
"What is it?" asked Sam as she made her way over to him.
"The food's gone" he answered.
"What do you mean the food's gone?" asked Angela. She turned to Nick, "Did you get hungry last night?"
"I didn't touch it" said Nick defensively.
"Then who did?"Angela asked.
Howie interrupted her, "Look at these prints on the ground."
"Looks like..." Angela turned to us slowly, "...Bear tracks."
"Wha-at?" said Sam, sounding scared, "I didn't know they live here."
"Do you guys think they might come back?" I asked.
The others stared at me wordlessly. Then we all grabbed our bags and ran for the boat. We rowed till our arms hurt and we were safely home.
