Blood Brothers #107

The episode opens with Liz walking through the hall at school and bumping into Max, who informs her that the teacher for their next period is out sick -- so they decide to skip class and go do "something normal for once." As they're driving down the old deserted highway outside of town a song comes on the radio that Liz describes as being the "song that describes her entire soul" and it turns out that Max loves the song, too. They're enjoying the ride and sharing a lot of "looks"... when a horse appears from out of nowhere. Max swerves to avoid it and loses control of the Jeep. When Liz comes to she sees Max with his head resting on the steering wheel, unconscious.

[Opening Credits]

The next scene opens with Max and Liz in an ambulance on their way to the hospital.

Michael and Maria meet in the hall where Maria accuses him of avoiding her. Just then, Maria's phone rings; it's Liz telling her about the accident. Michael grabs the phone and wants to know what's going on.

At the hospital, Liz watches in horror as Max is wheeled into a trauma room and the doctor orders blood tests.

Ms. Topolsky is notified by the principal that two students were just taken to Roswell Memorial Hospital -- Max Evans and Liz Parker. He tells her that he will stay in touch with the hospital and inform her as soon as there is any news, but Ms. Topolsky offers to take care of it. She then slips off into a side room and notifies "Control" to get someone over to the hospital right away... they might have an opportunity.

Isabel and Michael arrive at the hospital, where the nurse is drawing a blood sample. She tells them that there are too many people there and that they have to leave; Michael charms her into letting them stay. After she leaves, Michael tells Isabel and Liz that he'll get the blood and takes off. As he does so, we see an MIB slip into a room marked "Hospital Personnel Only." Isabel and Liz discuss what to do, Liz asking what they've done in past situations. Isabel informs her that nothing like this has ever happened before. What about when they got sick? Liz asks. "We don't get sick" is the reply. Isabel suggests that they take some of Liz's blood and mix it with Max's but Liz nixes the idea, because you can tell male blood from female blood. Isabel then states: We need to find a guy.

Enter Alex. He's sitting at a table at school trying to talk some guys into starting a garage band. Maria interrupts and drags Alex off.

At the hospital, the nurse sets the vial of Max's blood down among several other vials in the lab and walks out of the room. Michael enters and starts searching for Max's blood but hears someone else approaching and quickly hides. It's the MIB guy, dressed as an orderly. He starts searching.

Meanwhile, Alex arrives at the hospital, and Liz tells him she needs his blood.

The MIB's search is interrupted by the nurse's return. He leaves empty-handed.

Liz attempts to draw Alex's blood, but he is squeamish... Isabel finally takes over and draws the blood.

Michael approaches the nurse in the lab and asks her on a date. As he is talking the others slip him the vial of Alex's blood through the door, which he surreptitiously switches with that of Max behind his back, all the while "flirting" with the nurse. She finally gives him a definitive "no"-- but tells him to call her when he turns 18. His mission accomplished, he leaves.

The gang waits anxiously in the waiting room. Liz tells Alex that he can leave. He informs her that he could get arrested for what he just did... and they just want him to go home with no explanation? Liz attempts to "explain" without explaining; Alex comes to the conclusion that they're doing drugs. Liz finally gives up and says, yes -- it's drugs. Alex leaves in disgust. Just then, Isabel announces that Max is awake.

Max and his mother are talking with the doctor, who wants to keep him overnight for tests, but Max insists on returning home -- he feels fine. The doctor concedes, but tells him to take it easy for the next few days. The gang then come in and Liz is introduced to Mrs. Evans.

As everyone is leaving, Maria realizes she left her purse in Max's room and sends a disgusted Michael back for it. He interrupts two MIB guys (one of whom he recognizes), going through the garbage.

Michael, Max and Isabel are in Max's bedroom, discussing the surveillance. Michael says he wants to "know the enemy" and suggests a countersurveillance.

Topolsky meets with the MIB guy in an alley. He tells her that the blood test came back normal, but that he thinks something strange was going on. The teens were going in and out of Max's room all day... but they brought in another guy. Topolsky recognizes Alex from the agent's description. The agent says he thinks they switched blood samples.

Alex sits down next to Kyle the next day at lunch and Kyle accuses him of spying for Liz -- to see if Kyle is keeping her secret. When Alex pleads ignorance Kyle tells Alex that he is too smart to fall for that, that he is hurt that Liz sent the "B" team (Alex instead of Maria) and that he doesn't believe for one minute that Liz didn't let Alex in on her little secret. He then angrily walks off. The camera swings up to reveal that Isabel saw everything.

The countersurveillance plan is put into action, with Max and Liz as "bait." They walk down the street eating ice cream and pretend to window shop until Max spots the MIB guy in one of the store windows. They then make their way to the UFO Center, which is having an extremely busy day, and manage to lose the tail while inside. As the MIB leaves the UFO Center, Michael, Maria and Isabel follow him to his motel room. To Isabel's frustration, there is more flirting between Michael and Maria as they wait for the MIB to leave the motel again.

Max and Liz meet in the hall at school. They make plans to meet at the Crashdown after school and Liz invites him to stay for dinner, but he says he probably needs to go home since his mother thinks he's still recuperating. Max thanks Liz for her help in switching the blood and Liz tries to talk Max into letting Alex in on the secret. He refuses, but says they need to come up with something to tell Alex. Liz, although expressing her distaste for lying to Alex, informs Max that she told Alex at the hospital that they were doing drugs. Max apologizes for her having to lie to a friend; she replies "I guess these are the things you do when you feel a certain way about someone."

At the motel, Maria and Michael search the motel room while Isabel plays lookout. (Much flirting as they search.) Maria tells him to check the luggage tags; there aren't any. She tells him to check the notepads by the phone. No luck. She tells him to try the garbage can because "any baby-sitter worth her salt knows that the best place to look is in the garbage can -- it is always revealing." They find a piece of paper with the guy's name -- "Moss" (not known whether it is first or last name) -- and a torn up piece of paper with a phone number. When they dial the number, Topolsky answers; they hang up quickly.

Meanwhile, at school Topolsky corners Alex. She slips something into his drink while he isn't paying attention, and then proceeds to ask him about the events at the hospital. Liz approaches and interrupts the conversation before Alex spills the beans.

Liz attempts to talk to Alex, but he brushes her off by asking her how long she thinks she can keep her secret before it all blows up in her face. He then proceeds to have a nosebleed and heads for the men's room. After he leaves, Topolsky slips in and pulls the bloody paper towel out of the garbage.

At the Crashdown that afternoon, Michael is telling Max and Isabel about what he and Maria found in the motel room, while across the room Maria is telling Liz the same thing. The stories differ outrageously. However, the key point -- that Topolsky is involved -- comes through in both versions.

Meanwhile, in Topolsky's office she tells Alex that she "knows everything" -- the hospital, the blood tests, what he did for Max, and why. She tells Alex that she has friends who can help him, and asks him to write down everything that happened at the hospital that day and sign the statement. He hesitates and she tells him to come back whenever he is ready to do so.

Alex then goes to his locker, where Max approaches him and says they need to talk. Alex asks what went on at the hospital and is told that he saved Max's life, to which he replies "you screwed up mine." Alex tells Max that if he is here to scare him into not telling about the blood sample switch he is too late-- "she already knows." Max asks who knows; Alex replies "Topolsky." Max asks him if he told Topolsky and Alex says, "No, she told me. She wanted me to sign some kind of confession." When Max asks if he signed it, Alex doesn't answer, telling Max "Now you know what it feels like to be in the dark about things." Max tells Alex that he's only trying to protect him. Alex sarcastically replies that he didn't know so many people cared and walks off. Max walks off in the other direction. Liz approaches from still another direction and slips a note into Alex's locker.

Alex meets Liz at the Crashdown. She reminds him of how long they have been friends and that she has always turned to him for help for every problem she's ever had. She tells him that he has just helped her with the biggest problem she has ever had to face, and that she needs him to trust her even though she can't tell him what he wants to know. She tells him that there is a right side and a wrong side to this situation and that if he chooses the wrong side something really terrible is going to happen. She begs him to trust their five years of friendship and swears that she is on the right side.

Next scene: Alex shows up at Topolsky's office. He tells her he's not worried about himself right now, he's worried about Liz. He wants to know what will happen to her if Alex cooperates. Topolsky tells him she will probably have to answer some questions and undergo tests to be sure she wasn't harmed in any way. He then lets it slip that he thinks the others are involved in drugs and hesitates when Topolsky appears startled. She asks him to just write down everything that happened at the hospital and sign it. Just then, Liz knocks on the door and asks to speak to Ms. Topolsky.

After they leave the room, Alex logs on to Topolsky's computer, changes her password and checks her e-mail. Topolsky quickly realizes that Liz is just trying to keep her occupied and returns to her office with Liz close behind her, catching Alex in the act. He turns the computer around to face them, and the FBI logo is on the screen.

Topolsky informs them: "If you think you've just helped yourselves, you're wrong." Alex asks what the FBI is doing in Roswell. Topolsky avoids the question, telling Liz that this isn't going to end just because they know who Topolsky is, and that she was on their side. She then states that she hopes Max doesn't end up in the wrong hands without her there and leaves.

Alex tells Liz that if she doesn't tell him everything right now, this is the end of them being friends. She tells him that she can't tell him the truth, and he walks off with Liz looking after him sadly.
