Chapter 20
Melissa: Knock! Thud! The sound made by the hollow hotel room door filled the room with an echo over the noisy TV as we packed the last of our clothes back in the large duffle bags neatly stacked beside the two twin beds. “One second,” my voice filled the vacancy left after the knocking stopped. “I bet its Heather and Rachel,” Lillie mumbled, “make them wait!” “That’s so mean,” I glanced down at the clutter on Lillie’s side of the room and leaped over a pile of shoes in my path as I stumbled to the door. “I’m coming,” I tripped over a towel and went flying across the room. Thud! I rubbed the rug burned knee. “Ouch,” I managed to get out in a fit of laughter. Knock! “One second,” I hid my face in my hands as the pain started to grow. “I’ll get it,” Lillie replied a bit annoyed as she walked around me curled up on the floor. Click! The bolt was unhinged and the door swung open. I couldn’t see who it was behind Lillie’s tall figure as I sat on the cruel carpet, my knee burning with pain. “She’s on the floor,” Lillie tried not to laugh, but that even made me laugh. I watched as the blonde mass of hair peered around her and shot a confused glance my way. My heart leapt at the mere sight of him and I cursed myself for falling seconds before and not being able to kiss him at first sight. “What’d ya do,” he laughed. “Um…being the klutz that I am, I fell over something on the way to the door. Now I have rug burn.” He laughed, “So that’s what that loud noise was a second ago.” “Yep, me flying across the room. Just testing out the carpet, making sure it wasn’t too slick, ya know,” I joked as I saw a smile peek through the concern as he moved from the door to the puddle on the floor known as Melissa. “Are you ok?” I sighed, “I’ll be fine. It might hurt, but I’ll be fine.” “Let me see,” he took a seat on the floor next to me and examined the irritated skin. A painful expression crossed his face, “that had to hurt.” “Tell me about it.” “Got anything for it?” “Um,” I looked to Lillie, putting on my best pathetic smile. “Please, Lillie, you’re my favorite person in the whole world.” I laughed. “Except for you,” I whispered in Taylor’s ear and giving him a quick kiss as he smiled at the last comment. “Here,” she emerged from the bathroom moments later with the little white and yellow tube in hand. “I knew you’d end up using this,” she sighed. “Thank you,” I winked at her with a giggle, placing my hand gently on Taylor’s shoulder. “This might hurt a little,” he warned squirting a small amount into his perfect hands. I shivered and cringed as the cold gel hit my skin. “Ouch,” my knee started to sting, but the pain soon faded. “Thank you,” I whispered again into his ear. He helped me to my feet and we started to discuss what to do in the few hours I had left in the city. We finally settled on walking aimlessly around for a while with cameras in tow. “Sure ya don’t wanna come,” I asked Lillie, holding the door open as Taylor waited for me out in the hall. “Nope, this is a couple thing. Plus, you’ve got the whole rest of the trip to annoy me.” “Damn straight,” I laughed, saying bye as the door slammed and I felt bad for leaving her to pack alone in silence. “Come on,” Taylor urged and we made our way down the hall into the sunlit lobby and out the large doors into the crowded street. “Taylor.” “Huh?” “I heard the radio interview this morning.” “You did?” “Yea,” I smiled, “it was great.” He was silent as he grinned in contentment. “I think you know what I’m talking about,” I laughed, “Thank you,” I squeezed his hand. “I love you more than words can say,” he kissed it as we made our way down the street in search for the perfect photo opportunity
