Intro

This site was created to serve both the local Shonan surfing community and visiting surfers to Japan. It was launched in April 2001 and at first featured daily surf pics posted around 08:30 in the morning. I kept this up until October 2001, but decided to shelve this idea as there are so many other good quality sites listed on the Links page that offer surf pics. The shots taken that summer are all archived and will give you a good feel for the type of waves we have during our main swell season.

The website also offers information for visiting surfers about the Shonan coast and conditions, as well as useful links for weather and surf forecasting. Finally, it contains some galleries of epic surf days and trips to foreign countries. If anyone has any good surf pics from this area they want to put in the galleries, please mail them to me. Include the date, and place taken if possible.

I hope you find this site useful, and I welcome any comments/suggestions/questions to my email address:

Enjoy the waves!

About me

In case anyone is interested who put together this site, I thought I should provide a few details. I'm a 31 year old teacher from England, and have been living in Japan for two and a half years. My local break is Kugenuma Beach on the Shonan Coast around 1 hour South West of Tokyo.

I first started surfing in the late 70s as a child, catching little waves with my mum on an airbed! After about a 12 year break in my fledgling surfing career I refound my passion by joining the surf club at Uni in 1990, and learning to surf real waves in North Devon and South Wales. I slowly progressed from kook on a mini-mal to kook on a shortboard, and on the way had some great surf trips to Europe during the summer vacations. My mates and I also took part in the annual student surf championships in Newquay, where competitive surfing took a definite 2nd place to alcohol consumption.......

Since leaving Uni in 1994 I have worked or studied in several choice surfing spots, including Sweden and London (?!), but have somehow always managed to find a wave. My highlight was spending 1999 studying on the Gold Coast, Australia, and experiencing Greenmount, Snapper, Burleigh and D-Bah. Here I really became converted to longboarding, especially on smaller days and at the point breaks.

Now I'm in Japan for a couple of years and have been really surprised by the quality of the surf. I hope you'll find this site a new insight into this country - I'm sure a lot of people didn't imagine waves so close to Tokyo (I didn't!)
