The Rochester Jeffersons 1905- 1919 Pre NFL Years

The Rochester Jeffersons started around 1905 as a sandlot football team in Rochester,New York. The name Jeffersons comes from the street where they played their games on. Many teams at the turn of the century did this. By 1911, the team grew into one of the states best teams.Their biggest rival were the Rochester Scalpers. The two teams played twice a year, the last one usually on Thanksgiving day. In 1908, a young 16 year old Leo Lyons joined the team at left end.Two years later he would becomes the manager of the team too, at 18. Leo recruites Henry McDonald to play running back in 1911. Henry is a graduate of East High in Rochester and is recognized by the NFL as one of the first black NFL players.
