Miyama Ryu Combat Ju-Jutsu History

Shinan Antonio Pereira

November 27th, 1922 - July 16th, 1999

The contents of this site were obtained from the books created by D'Arcy Rahming, Kaiden Miyama Ryu Ju-jutsu. In 1960 the Tremont School of Judo and Ju-jutsu opened its doors to the public for the first time. The founder, a fierce man named Antonio Pereira, taught a fighting style which he called Combato, the way of Combat.

Combato was a crude form of Ju-jutsu that the founder had developed while participating durin World War II . While serving as a sniper for the U.S. Army in Australia ,he began supplementing his military hand-to-hand training with Judo.

After the war,the founder received an invitation from Nakabayashi to come to Japan. Nakabayashi was an instructor of Taiho-Jutsu( police arresting arts ) and a seventh degree black belt in Kodokan Judo who was impressed by a demonstration that the founder had performed.

The founder traveled to Japan where he studied martial arts for eight hours a day under such masters as Mifune of Judo and Ueshiba of Aikido. For his efforts, the founder was awarded a Nidan in Kodokan Judo and a teaching certificate in Aikido signed by Kisshomaru Ueshiba.

The founder returned to the United States and began to teach Aikido at the Tremont School. He soon discovered that Aikido wasn’t suitable for the residents of the Bronx. They needed more aggressive self-defense techniques, so he refined his original Combato, by augmenting it with the classical techniques that he had learned in Japan. The founder called his method Miyama Ryu, which means the school of the Three Mountains. He named the school Tremont ( the english translation of Miyama Ryu ) and assumed the title of Shinan , which means originator.

Myama Ryu Ju-jutsu has become an international system . Schools located across the United States, in Santo Domingo ,Dominican Republic and in Matehuala,Mexico.

Miyama Ryu fighting techniques have been taught to U.S. Army Special Forces teams, Internal Revenue Services Criminal Investigation units, several police departments, and to thousands of civilians.
