The Pedigree of a Champion' Little Current, the Preakness and Belmont winner and 1974's champion 3-year-old, unquestionably has the pedigree of a champion. A son of outstanding European stakes performer, the late Sea-Bird, he was produced by Luiana, an unraced half-sister, by the 2, 000 Guineas winner and classic sire, My Babu, to two national champions— the 1962 handicap filly or mare, Primonetta, and the 1963 3- year-old leader Chateaugay. This distaff family has played a significant role in American racing in 1974. Primonetta, for example, is dam of Maud Muller, one of the season's finest 3-year-old fillies, and Chateaugay, who is now standing in Japan, is sire of True Knight, one of the year's best handicap stars, and Infuriator, a major stakes winner in New York. '. Sea-Bird, who lost but once—and then narrowly—in eight lifetime starts, included the Epsom Derby and Prix de 1'Arc de Triomphe among his conquests. By Dan Cupid, an American-bred son of Native Dancer, he was produced by Sicalade, a daughter of the marvelous French sire Sicambre, a classic winner and classic sire who gained chef-de-race status and ranks with Ribot among modern-day classic sires. Dan Cupid placed in the French Derby. At stud, Sea-Bird sired such U. S. stars as Gold Standard, Sea Songster, Kittiwake, Shearwater, Dubassoff, Sea Sister, Sea Saga, Rudo Bird and Strider, but his finest performers probably raced in Europe. These in-, elude that practically faultless filly Allez France, who has beaten Dahlia repeatedly, captured the Prix de 1'Arc de Triomphe this season and has been a consumate champion in France for three straight years. Sea- Bird also; sired the classic-placed Byr (French Derby) and Great Heron (Irish 2, 000 Guineas). Banquet Bell, dam of Luiana, Chateaugay and Primonetta, was a winner of modest, restricted stakes. By chef-de-race Polynesian, she belongs to a female family which has also been responsible for Athene, the San Juan Capistrano winner by Zeus, and War Plumage, a Coaching Club American Oaks victor. Athene is the distaff ancestress of the 1974 SW Timeless Moment and War Plumage's dam, War Feathers, is ancestress of the 1974 SW North Broadway. Little Current is inbred, 4x3, to Polynesian, sire of Little Current's grandsire, Native Dancer, and of Ban- quet Bell, Little Current's second dam. The 3-year-old champion has a dosage diagram of: 6-9-10-23-5. His classic middle aptitudinal group is his second strongest and his right wing, the stamina wing, is much stronger than his left wing, the speed wing.
