#9-ranked Chaffey (2-0) got 18 points each from their stellar backcourt of PG T.J. Smith and SG Larry Dew and held off a stubborn Glendale (0-1) squad at Vaquero gym Wednesday night.
Smith and Dew each finished with 18 pts and 5 asts, and Smith also grabbed 6 of Chaffey's 19 steals (the Panthers forced 40 Glendale turnovers in all). But when Smith went to the bench in foul trouble early in the second half, Glendale rallied behind the strong play of their two excellent big men to take a 54-52 lead with about 14 minutes left in the game. And the Vaqueros still led 68-64 before Chaffey went on a 15-0 run to take control.
Glendale got 32 pts, 11 rebds and 4 blocks from freshman Ctr Jamar Eubanks, and 27 pts plus 10 rebs from fellow freshman Owen Duckworth. Freshman wing Rolando Nunez came off the bench to score 14 (4 threes) and dish out 6 asts. And the only returning starter for Glendale, SF Jovan Jester, made all 3 of his field goal attempts, all of which were 3-pointers, for 9 pts. He also dished out a game-high 7 asts before fouling out midway through the second half.
Glendale began the game on a 7-0 run and led 9-2 before a 19-3 run gave Chaffey a lead it held the rest of the first half. But when Smith picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and went to the bench, it opened the door for the Vaqueros to re-claim the lead until the Panthers' second-half run put them in control again.
Chaffey also got 12 points from SG Mike Moreno, and 9 (3 threes) from SF Alwyn Jordan. PF Kyle Sears and SF Chris Brown each scored 8 points, and Brown made 3 FTs in the final minute that thwarted any final Glendale comeback bid.
