SF Larry Wickett scored 18 pts and SF Davion Mize had 13 pts and 5 asts to lead #14-North Contra Costa to an 89-80 win over DeAnza in a foul-filled game at the 7th Annual Las Positas Tip-Off Classic.
Contra Costa (1-0) trailed, 53-46, early in the second half, but went on an extended 28-11 run to take a 74-64 lead with just under six minutes left in the game. DeAnza (0-1) closed the gap to five points several down the stretch but never quite caught up.
The teams were whistled for a combined 58 fouls, but DeAnza was particularly affected as the Dons were called for 32 of them and had three players foul out and three more players finish the game with four fouls. Contra Costa had 26 fouls called but had just one player foul out.
DeAnza led by as many as six points in the first half and led, 46-43, at the break. A basket by PF Shaquille Gilbert made it 51-44 early in the second half, and a steal and jam by SF Nolan Williams made it 53-46, matching the Dons' largest lead of the game.
Contra Costa rallied to tie the score at 58 on a floater by PG Justin Pollard, and took a 60-58 lead on a pair of free throws by Mize with 11:26 left in the game. The margin reached ten points at 74-64 after a basket by Wickett after a steal by SF Jacob Monroe with just under six minutes to go.
Contra Costa cut the deficit to five points at 76-71 and also trailed by five points several more times in the final few minutes, including by an 81-76 score.
Pollard made two free throws with 1:23 left to make it 83-76, and PG Derius Johnson split tow free throws to make it 84-76 A basket by Mize pushed the lead back to double digits at 88-78 with 35.8 seconds left, and a free throw by PF Tyler West made it 89-78 moments later, giving the Comets their largest lead of the game and clinching the win.
Wickett led the Comets with 18 pts and added 6 rebs. Johnson had 14 pts, with 13 of those coming on 5-for-5 from the floor in the first half. Mize had 13 pts and a game-high 5 asts, and West had 11 pts and a team-best 8 rebs. Pollard had 11 pts and 3 asts off the bench.
For DeAnza, SG Dawson Johnson led all scorers with 20 pts and added 8 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. Williams came off the bench for 16 pts before fouling out with 1:27 left. SF George Henderson had 12 pts on 4-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the line plus 7 rebs and 3 asts. Gilbert chipped in with 8 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals.
