PG Booker Shabazz scored 13 pts and dished out 4 asts, and PF Kellen Sweetwyne came off the bench for a double-double as #7-North Las Positas started the 2012-13 season with a 68-54 win over Gavilan at the 7th Annual Las Positas Tip-Off Classic.
Playing without Coach Tony Costello on the bench for the first time in the 7-year history of the program, the Hawks (1-0) used a key 20-3 run in the second half to take control of the game.
And Costello, on medical leave this season while recovering from cancer surgery, was close by as he manned the microphone during the game as interim coach Ward Farris notched his first career victory.
Las Positas started the game with a 7-0 run and led the entire first half, holding a 31-25 lead at the break.
Gavilan (0-1) started the second half with a 9-0 run, taking a 32-31 lead on a 3-pointer by PG Joel Sales and leading, 34-31, after Sales scored on a driving lay-up.
But Las Positas responded - even without any prodding from Costello, who remained remarkably neutral over the microphone - and went on a 20-3 run to take control of the game.
Booker put the Hawks back on top, 35-34, and then SF Julian Redmon scored on a lay-up after a steal to make it 37-34. SG Jacob Contreras then hit consecutive 3-pointers. Sweetwyne scored on a driving lay-up to make it 45-36, and made two free throws with 7:14 left to make it 47-37.
SG Juawnn Springfield scored on a fast break off a pass from PG Ikel McConner to make it 49-37, and PF Uche Okpalaugo finished the run with a short jumper to make it 51-37. Las Positas led by double digits the rest of the way.
In addition to Booker, top scorers for Las Positas were Springfield, who had 11 pts, and Contreras, who had 11 pts and 3 steals off the bench. Sweetwyne had 10 pts and a game-high 11 rebs.
For Gavilan, Sales led all scorers with 15 pts and added 6 rebs and 3 asts. Ctr Derrick Fox had 8 pts, 6 rebs and 3 blocked shots but was hampered by foul trouble; the 6-7 freshman went to the bench with his 4th foul during the 20-3 run and fouled out with 1:48 remaining.
