SF Shane Foster took a long outlet pass from PG Dwight Jones and scored the game-winning basket at the buzzer to lift Moorpark (2-0) to an 82-80 win over host Canyons (1-1) to win the unofficial championship of the Clash at Canyons Tip-Off Event Saturday afternoon.
It's a basketball cliche that a missed 3-pointer can lead to a fast break. And it's also a cliche that when a team misses a lay-up at one end, the other team will probably get a lay-up at the other end of the court. And both cliches were shown to be true in the final seconds of this one.
As the clock ticked down below 10 seconds, SF Matt Hornbuckle tried to break an 80-80 tie with a 3-pointer for Moorpark. The shot missed badly, and the rebound went long to Canyons PG Terrez Scott, who quickly outletted the ball to Ctr Jonathan Phillips for a lay-up.
But as the clock passed the 5-second mark, Phillips missed the lay-up. The ball went to Jones, who dribbled twice and quickly headmanned the ball up court to Foster, who caught the pass in stride and laid the ball off the backboard as the buzzer sounded, giving Moorpark a stunning 82-80 win.
This one was close all the way. Moorpark opened a 14-point lead at 22-8 in the early going, but Canyons quickly erased that deficit. The Cougars tied the game at 41 before four points by Hornbuckle in the final minute of the first half gave the Raiders a 45-41 lead at the break.
Moorpark again pushed its lead to double figures at 52-41 early in the second half, but again, Canyons rallied to close the margin to just two points midway through the half. COC finally took its first lead of the game at 76-75 on a pair of free throws by Ctr Justin Smith with 2:43 left.
In the final minutes, the lead went back and forth before a basket by Ctr Redmond Parker with 25 seconds left brought Moorpark even at 80-80. But Parker missed a total of three free throws in the final 25 seconds, any one of which would have given the Raiders the lead. Still, that just set the stage for the frantic, dramatic final sequence.
Parker finished with a double-double for Moorpark, posting totals of 14 pts and 10 rebs. Hornbuckle also had 14 pts plus 6 rebs and 3 asts. SF B.J. Wortham added 12 pts off the bench and SG Chris Booker had 11 for the Raiders.
For Canyons, SG Jason Holzwarth led the way with a game-high 15 pts. PF Behrang Behjoo came off the bench to score 13 pts and Phillips came off the bench to add 11. Scott had a double-double with 11 pts and a game-high 10 asts.
