PF Arnette Hollis had 28 pts to lead Santa Monica (1-1) to a 72-69 win over Grossmont (0-2) Saturday afternoon in the second day of the season-opening Clash at Canyons event.
Santa Monica led most of the way, opening a 21-9 lead in the first 8 minutes and holding a 4-point edge at halftime. But Grossmont took a momentary lead at 46-44 early in the second half, and the game was close the rest of the way.
Back-to-back baskets by Hollis broke a 63-all tie, and the Corsairs held a lead the rest of the way. Still, Grossmont remained close, and Santa Monica wasn't able to secure the win until SG James Hankins missed a would-be game-tying 3-point try for Grossmont at the final buzzer.
In addition to Hollis, SF Rodney Hudson was the other Corsair to score in double figures with 14 pts plus 5 asts and 3 steals. PG Eric Bell added 8 pts and 5 asts, and Ctr Matcar Gueye had 5 pts and a team-high 10 rebs off the bench before fouling out in the final minute.
For Grossmont, Ctr Chris Coleman led the way with a double-double, scoring 16 pts and pulling down a game-high 12 rebs. Ctr James Josephson came off the bench to add 12 pts, and SF Ryan McNichols had 10 pts plus 4 rebs and 3 asts in a solid all-around performance.
