Santa Ana 76, San Diego City 70

SF Tyre Thompson scored 29 points, including 5 threes, to lead #15 Santa Ana (5-2) to a 76-70 win over San Diego City (3-6) in the third-place game.

Santa Ana led much of the game after the first few minutes, but couldn’t seem to shake a tough SD City squad. Santa Ana never trailed in the second half, but their lead was just 3 points as late as with 1:03 left in the game.

Early on, Santa Ana jumped out to an 11-6 lead only to see SD City rally and go ahead, 20-18, on a pair of free throws by SG Jamel McGuire. But PG Michael Hernandez quickly tied the game at 20 for the Dons, and Santa Ana never trailed again.

Still, it was close the rest of the way. At the half, it was tied at 28 and midway through the second half McGuire threw down a spectacular dunk, drew a foul and made the free throw to tie the game once again at 48.

Santa Ana scored the next 10 points to take a 58-48 lead, but SD City hung around, closing the gap to 3 at 65-62 after a pair of McGuire free throws with just over 3 minutes left. And the Knights still trailed by just 3 after another pair of McGuire free throws made it 71-68 with 1:03 remaining.

But that’s as close as the Knights could get. PF James Silvie made a pair of free throws himself to push the lead back to 5 at 73-68, and then stole the ball back a few seconds later to help seal the win for the Dons.

For Santa Ana, in addition to Thompson, top performers included Hernandez (16 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts), Silvie (11 pts, 7 rebs) and Ctr Sean Luecke (7 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blk,). Hernandez was named to the All-Tournament team.

For SD City, McGuire had 20 pts and 5 rebs to lead the way; he was also named to the All-Tournament team. PG Shawn Brooks came off the bench to add 11 pts, including 3 threes, while Ctr David Kinder had 9 pts and 9 rebs in a reserve role. SF Cornel Williams had a strong all-around game with 10 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts.
