Orange Coast 81, Cuyamaca 78

SF Shaun Engle fed PF Cameron Wise for the go-ahead basket with 2 seconds left, and stole the ensuing inbounds pass to make sure it was the winning basket, lifting Orange Coast to a dramatic 81-78 win over #7 Cuyamaca in the Consolation Final of the Neil Edwards Classic at Citrus Sunday afternoon.

Engle finished the day with 11 pts, 9 asts and 5 steals, and his dish to Wise proved to be the difference in a game that Cuyamaca led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Wise also drew a foul and made the resulting free throw on the play. After several timeouts, Cuyamaca tried to inbound the ball to SG Luke Kelly but Engle stole the ball at midcourt, ending the game.

Cuyamaca led much of the game, buoyed by the splendid inside play of Ctr Clinton Shelton. The 6-8 sophomore from Helix HS had 13 pts, 13 rebs and 6 blocks before fouling out on the game-winning play.

In the first half, Shelton helped put Orange Coast Ctr Steven Cornett on the bench in foul trouble, enabling the Coyotes to overcome an early 7-2 deficit and build a 40-34 halftime lead. Shelton had 9 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks in the first half.

But early in the second half, Cornett drew fouls on Shelton on successive trips down the floor, sending Shelton to the bench. Nonetheless, Cuyamaca momentarily expanded its lead to 53-39 after a running jumper by SG Craig Jackson midway through the half.

Eventually, however, the Pirates rallied. Sparked by a pair of threes by PG Tres Saldivar and SG Miguel Gonzalez, the Pirates went on a 24-9 run to take a 63-62 lead on a long jumper by Wise with just over 8 minutes to play. Orange Coast soon stretched its lead to 4 at 72-68 after a steal & basket by Engle.

But then Cuyamaca rallied, taking a 78-76 lead on a three by Kelly with 1:50 left. Then with 1:15 remaining Orange Coast tied the game at 78 on a basket by Wise on a feed from Engle, eerily previewing the play that would win the game for the Pirates just over a minute later.

For Orange Coast, Cornett led all scorers with 21 points and also grabbed a team-high 12 rebs. Wise added 12 pts. Saldivar had a solid game as well with 7 pts and 5 asts.

For Cuyamaca, in addition to Shelton there were several standouts. SF Garren Cunningham had a double-double with 13 pts and 12 rebs. PF J.R. Griffin stuffed the stat sheet with 12 pts, 7 rebs, 9 asts and 3 blocked shots. Jackson gave the Coyotes a big lift off the bench with 10 pts and 3 asts. And Kelly had 14 pts on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting day from the floor, including 4 threes.

Orange Coast improves to 3-3 with the win while Cuyamaca falls to 5-3. Cornett was named to the All-Tournament team.
