SF Jamar Smith poured in 41 points for #2 San Bernardino Valley (4-2) in the championship game of the Moorpark Tourney to help the Wolverines top the host Raiders (4-3) and claim Most Valuable Player honors for the event.
With standout Ctr Jerome Habel hobbled with foul trouble, Smith took it upon himself to keep SBVC in the game against the fast-paced Raiders. His 23 points in the first half helped SBVC take a 2-point lead at intermission, and he made his last 5 shots from the field in the second half to help SBVC pull away.
PG Jacob Lutson also had a marvelous game, coming off the bench to score 11 pts and dish out a game-high 14 asts. PF Tommey Posey was another reserve with a huge game, making all 9 of his shots from the floor and finishing with 20 pts and a game-high 11 rebs. SG DeWayne Pettus was also outstanding with 18 pts, 6 rebs and 8 asts. For the game, SBVC shot 64% from the floor.
But Moorpark was in contention until the final minutes of the game. The Raiders trailed by just 2 at 85-83 before a 12-3 run put SBVC in control entering the final 3:45. Moorpark had led by as many as 8 earlier in the second half.
The Raiders were led by PG Keith Lawrence, who drained 4 threes en route to 26-point game. SG Tyler Carr made 3 threes and finished with 18 pts. SF Mark Wells (13 pts) and Ctr David McGrath (12 pts, 9 rebs) also scored in double figures for Moorpark.
Smith was named the tourney MVP. Lutson, Lawrence, Carr, Habel and West Hills forward Joshua Lopez were named to the all-tournament team.
