Ctr Jaron Buchanan had 17 pts and 8 rebs to lead Victor Valley (5-4) to a 69-61 win over Cuyamaca (2-5) in the consolation final of the Neil Edwards Classic at Citrus College Sunday afternoon.
SG Dwight Gordon added 14 pts, 5 rebs, 6 asts and 5 steals for the winners, and SF Alan Alston had 5 pts, 5 asts and a game-high 11 rebs. PF Tim Sanders also reached double figures with 10 pts.
Victor Valley led from start to finish, jumping out to a 7-0 lead early on and building a 17-point lead at 29-12 midway through the first half. At halftime, teh Rams led, 38-24.
Cuyamaca rallied to cut the margin to just 4 points at 59-55 with 2:55 remaining in the game, and still trailed by just 4 at 65-61 with 1:02 left, but couldn't get any closer. A pair of free throws by Gordon and a dunk by Sanders on a pass from Gordon after a steal by PG Deanard Crouch sealed the win for VVC.
SF Nick Taylor led all scorers with 21 pts, including 4 threes, for Cuyamaca. SG Dahir Nasser had 16 pts and PG Roshun Wynne came off the bench to spark the Coyotes with 12 pts, including a half-court shot at the buzzer to end the first half, and 5 steals.
Alston was named to the all-tournament team.
