PG Darrian McKinstry scored 22 pts and Ctr Johnny Barnes stuffed the stat sheet with 20 pts, 9 rebs, 5 blocks and 3 steals as #3 San Bernardino Valley (5-0) topped #8 Compton (3-2), 75-70, in the championship game of the Moorpark Tournament Saturday afternoon.
It was a very evenly-played game throughout, with neither team leading by more than 8 points at any time. Compton held that 8-point advantage at 24-16 in the first half, but SBVC closed the half on a 14-6 run to tie the game at 30 at intermission on a buzzer-beating jumper by SF Michael Johnson. SBVC's largest lead was at 52-47 after a steal, acrobatic one-handed lay-up and free throw for a conventional 3-point play by McKinstry with 9:10 remaining. But Compton rallied after that, taking a 59-58 lead on a steal & basket by SG Billy Stone with 5:08 to play.
SBVC re-took the lead on a basket by SF Darrius Walton, but a three by Compton's Stone put the Tartars back ahead, 62-60. And a baseline drive by PG Courtnei Houston made it 64-60.
From then on, SBVC took over, scoring the game's next 8 points and finishing the game on a 15-6 run. Walton nailed a jumper to cut the lead to 64-62, and SG Lance Hurdle made a pair of free throws to tie it at 64. Then Walton stole the ball at midcourt, drove and drew the foul; his good free throws put SBVC ahead, 66-64. Then a steal & basket by McKinstry pushed the Wolverine lead to 4 at 68-64.
Compton answered back with a fourth-chance putback basket by 5-6 PG Christian Chavarria, but then SBVC saw their 4-point lead restored when Hurdle canned a turnaround jumper to make it 70-66.
In the final minute, McKinstry made 5 of 6 free throws to seal the win, giving SBVC the championship.
For SBVC, Barnes was named tournament MVP. Joining him on the all-tournament team were McKinstry and Hurdle (12 pts, 5 asts). Walton also had a strong game with 11 pts, 8 rebs and 3 steals.
For Compton, Stone led the way with 20 pts and was named to the all-tournament team. SF Justin Carter came off the bench to add 13 pts and 4 asts. Chavarria had a strong game with 9 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts. Houston, who had 8 pts before fouling out late in the game, joined Stone on the all-tournament team.
This is SBVC's 5th consecutive Moorpark Tournament championship, a run that includes 3 head coaches (John Smith, Phil Matthews and now Derick Pugh).
