SG Devin Haught scored 18 points, helping visiting Skyline (2-3) overcome a 14-point first-half deficit and claim a 69-61 victory over Contra Costa (0-4) Wednesday afternoon in San Pablo.
Contra Costa led virtually the entire first half, pushing the lead to 14 at 25-11 at one point. But a pair of threes by Haught, including one in the final minute, helped Skyline trim the halftime deficit to 5 at 29-24. Skyline continued the charge in the second half, tying the game at 38 on a free throw by PG Bryan Ngo with 13:44 left. Contra Costa went back in front on a FG+FT 3-point play by SF Eli Shaw moments later, but then Skyline took a 42-41 lead when PF Tony Patch scored after a steal with just over 12 minutes left.
That basket was the start of a 15-1 run that included another three by Haught and three baskets by PF Sean Jordan, pushing the Trojan advantage to 53-42.
Contra Costa made a late charge, pulling to within 3 at 57-54 after a three by Cole. A few minutes later, the Comets still trailed by 3 at 59-56 when PF Jason Maples tried what would have been a game-tying three. But his shot missed, and Skyline pushed its lead back to 5 when Jordan scored on a 1-hander moments later for the Trojans, making it 64-59 with 1:30 left. Haught made one free throw to make it 65-59 with 1:07 left, and Ngo drained a pair of free throws with 38.3 seconds left to push the margin to 8 at 67-59 and seal the win.
Early on, Contra Costa took control after both teams started slowly. The game was still tied 2-2 more than 6 minutes in, but then the Comets built their lead. A basket by PG Alex McDole on a nice feed by SG Alex Chen pushed the margin into double digits at 19-8, and Contra Costa extended its lead to 25-11 before Haught helped bring the Trojans back.
For Skyline, standouts in addition to Haught included Patch, who had 15 pts and a team-best 9 rebs, and Jordan, who had 12 pts, 6 rebs and a pair of blocked shots.
For Contra Costa, Ctr Orlando Arnold came off the bench to post a double-double with 12 pts and a game-high 11 rebs, and also blocked 2 shots. Shaw also had 12 pts. Maples had a strong all-around game with 9 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals.
