SG Jason Curtis and PF Antonio DuPlessis each had 14 points to help host Chabot (1-1) overcome a 7-point halftime deficit and post a 77-69 win over Monterey Peninsula (1-2) Tuesday night in a Coast Conference crossover game in Hayward.
Curtis also dished out a team-high 6 asts, while DuPlessis scored 12 of his points and grabbed 6 of his team-high 7 rebs in the second half as the Gladiators rolled to the win.
MPC lost despite a tremendous game from Ctr Marco Ramos, who had 20 pts and 20 rebs for the Lobos. SG Darroll Phillps added 13 pts and SF Michael Miller, plagued by foul trouble in the second half, had 11.
Chabot led in the early going before backup PG Eric Taylor sparked MPC with a basket and a pair of assists to help the Lobos pull within a point at 16-15. A putback by Ramos moments later gave MPC a 21-20 lead. Chabot went back in front with a three from SG Jenner Christiansen, but threes by Phillips and SG Adrian Hernandez gave MPC a 29-27 lead. The Lobos extended that to 38-31 after a three by Phillips and a lay-up by PG Will Nganga in the final minute of the half.
But in the second half, Chabot turned the tide, thanks to some excellent shooting (51% on fgs) and ballhandling (just 4 turnovers). The Gladiators began the half on a 9-0 run, taking a 40-38 lead on a basket by Ctr Chris Woodbury. MPC went back in front on a baseline jumper by Ramos that made it 42-40 and held the lead until DuPlessis scored on a putback to tie the game at 51. A three by Christiansen put Chabot back in front, and from there the Gladiators pulled away. A steal & basket by SF Eugene Webb pushed the lead to 8 at 60-52, and a three by DuPlessis pushed the lead to 9 at 65-56. A pair of free throws by Curtis and three free throws by PG Ramon Greene down the stretch sealed the win for Chabot.
Chabot's depth paid off in the win as 11 different players scored for the Gladiators. Webb had a solid game with 10 pts and 6 rebs, while Greene added 9 pts and 5 asts. Christiansen was impressive in a backup role with 6 pts (a pair of threes) and 4 asts.
For MPC, the story was Ramos with his 20-20 game. PF Max Frise had the next-highest rebound total for MPC with 6. Nganga had 4 pts and 7 asts though he also had 7 turnovers. Hernandez (9 pts) and Taylor (2 pts, 5 asts) did well off the bench.
