Glendale 76, Santa Barbara 72

Ctr Durwin Williams' 2 FTs with 12.3 seconds left broke a 72-72 tie and gave host Glendale the championship of the Vaquero Tip-Off Tourney, avenging a Glendale loss to SBCC in last year's tourney final. Williams finished with 20 pts and a game-high 8 rebs and was named tournament MVP.

Glendale jumped out to a 5-0 lead early on as SBCC missed its first 7 shots from the floor before SG Jonathan Pickert's baseline jumper 3:45 into the game finally broke the drought. Glendale continued to lead until a three by Ctr Trent Watts and a pair of FTs by SF Mike Searle gave SBCC a 23-22 lead midway through the half. SBCC finished the half on a 6-0 run on a basket and 2 FTs by Watts followed by a pair of FTs by PF Brian Corbett and led at the break, 40-32.

But Glendale rallied early in the second half, tying the game on a pullup jumper by Williams with 14:30 left that knotted the game at 46. A fast-break basket by PF Tyler Rose and a FG+FT 3-point play by Williams gave Glendale a 5-point lead at 51-46.

But SBCC rallied behind Pickert, who drained 4 straight shots including 2 threes, and the game was back-and-forth entering the final minutes.

Phillips made an absolutely incredible block from behind (reminiscient of Kobe's block on Andre Miller a couple weeks ago) on a layup attempt by SBCC's Rob Young with 3:30 left that got everyone's emotions going. As Glendale partisans cheered, Young protested and was called for a technical foul, which was also his 5th foul of the game. Jester made a pair of FTs to make it 66-63 and a three by PG DeJournett Wyatt pushed Glendale's lead to 69-63. But moments later Wyatt fouled out, and Glendale's backup PG Kalen Mahoney was sidelined after banging his knee on the floor earlier in the game.

And SBCC rallied, tying the game at 70 on a pair of FTs by Searle with 1:23 left. Phillips scored on a driving layup after a nice feed from Rose to put Glendale ahead, 72-70, but SBCC answered back with a pair of FTs by Pickert to knot the game once again at 72.

On their next possession, Glendale got the ball in to Williams in the post. And as he spun towards the basket, he drew the foul. His 2 FTs with 12.3 left made it 74-72.

SBCC had one last chance to tie or take the lead, but Pickert's 3-pointer from the corner bounced off the rim. Phillips grabbed the rebound and was fouled immediately, but by then only 0.2 seconds remained. And when Phillips drained both FTs, the game's outcome was decided. Still, on SBCC's last inbound attempt, Phillips leaped into the air and swatted the ball back over the end line as the horn sounded.

Phillips finished with 21 pts to lead Glendale. Wyatt had 5 pts, 7 rebs and 6 asts before fouling out. SG Jovan Jester added 11 pts, and Rose had a strong game off the bench with 8 pts and 7 boards.

For SBCC, Pickert led the way with 23 pts. Watts had a strong game with 21 pts, 7 rebs and 3 asts.

It was a scrappy win for Glendale, who finished the game without its top 2 point guards and committed 23 turnovers (compared to just 9 for SBCC). But Glendale shot 60% from the floor in the second half while holding SBCC to 33%. That, and some clutch FTs by Williams, were enough to pull out the win.
