Irvine Valley 67, Southwestern 54

SG Durrell Norman had 15 pts and was one of three players to score in double figures as Irvine Valley (2-0) topped visiting Southwestern (0-1) Tuesday night.

Irvine Valley led all the way after a pair of baskets by Ctr Max Carrier gave the Lasers a 4-0 lead, but Southwestern was still within 3 points at 45-42 with just over nine minutes remaining before Irvine Valley pulled away late.

Carrier's two early baskets made it 4-0, and Irvine Valley increased its lead to 14-4 after another putback by Carrier 8:03 into the game. The IVC lead swelled to as much as 13 points after a 3-pointer by PF Travis Fulton made it 30-17 with 4:30 left in the first half.

But those would be the last points for IVC in the first half, and Southwestern closed the gap to 6 at 30-24 at halftime. A driving lay-up by Ctr Donald Gaines early in the second half cut the margin to 5 points at 38-33, and a short jumper by PG Devone Davis made it 45-42.

After that, however, Irvine Valley went on a 20-5 run to put the game away. A bank shot by SF Joe Eberhard made it a 10-point game at 56-46 with 5:20 left. Two free throws by Eberhard, one by Norman and two by Fulton made it 61-46 with 3:42 left. Then a pair of jumpers by SF Sean Donovan pushed the margin to 18 points at 65-47 with just over two minutes left to end any remaining doubt about the game's outcome.

Norman scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half, in contrast to Carrier, who had 10 of his 14 points in the first half. Carrier also had 9 rebs. Fulton had 12 pts and Eberhard had 9 pts plus a game-high 10 rebs.

For Southwestern, Ctr Charles Joseph led the way with 17 pts, 7 rebs and 5 blocked shots. Gaines had 9 pts while SF Anthony Allen and SG Mark Kiefer each had 8.

Southwestern shot 41.5% from the floor, compared to just 33% for Irvine Valley. But Southwestern had twice as many turnovers, 22 to 11, and Irvine Valley won the rebounding battle, 41-32, and all those extra possessions made the difference for the Lasers.
