SF Phil Friesen had 14 points, one of four Owls to reach double figures, as Citrus (2-0) won easily over visiting Victor Valley (0-1) Wednesday night in Glendora.
Friesen made 5 of 6 shots from the floor, including a pair of threes, and dished out 3 asts to lead Citrus. His backup, Aaron Arango, came off the bench to make a pair of threes and finish with 12 pts. Ctr Richard Frohlich went 5-for-5 from the floor and added 11 pts plus 3 rebs, while PF Chad Allan had 10 pts and 7 boards.
Victor Valley led 6-3 in the early going behind 4 points from Ctr Keegan Hoover. But then Citrus PG Kevin McCaughey drove the lane, made a lay-up and drew a foul; his good free throw tied the game 6-6. Moreover, the foul was Hoover's second of the game, sending the 6-8 sophomore to the bench.
And then came the onslaught. SG Buchi Awaji drained a three to give Citrus the lead, and the Owls were on their way. The Owls pushed the lead to 17-6 before PG Andrew Ellis finally broke the 14-0 run with a jumper on an inbounds play. But after that, Citrus scored the next 14 points for a 28-2 run that made it 31-8 and put the Owls in control. SG Virgil Buensuceso capped the run with a three with 7:38 left in the half.
The first half ended with another 3-point play by McCaughey, pushing the Citrus lead to 30 at 52-22. Victor Valley never made a serious dent in that lead in the second half, allowing Citrus to give its deep bench plenty of playing time.
McCaughey finished with 7 pts and a game-high 8 asts. Ctr Deonta Black added 9 pts, 6 rebs and 2 blocks before leaving after hitting the floor hard on a drive to the basket early in the second half. Awaji added 8 pts, 7 rebs and 4 asts.
For Victor Valley, Ellis led the way with a game-high 18 pts plus 4 asts and 4 steals. SG Eli Thornton added 11 pts. Hoover had 9 pts and 4 rebs before fouling out with 7 minutes left.
