LA Valley 83, LA Harbor 74

SG Gustavo Valle scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half, helping host LA Valley (1-0) to an 83-74 win over LA Harbor (0-1) Tuesday night in the season opener for both teams.

Valle helped the Monarchs overcome a 13-point first-half deficit, and got help from SG Vernon Alexander, who scored all 14 of his points in the second half.

The Monarchs used their press to force 45 Harbor turnovers and generate 27 steals on the night. But Harbor still led 33-20 late in the first half, thanks to some cold shooting by Valley. The Monarchs closed the gap to 6 points at 38-32 at the break, but still shot just 26% (13-50) in the first half.

But in the second half, the shots started going in for the home team, and the Monarchs quickly pulled into the lead at 42-40 after a pair of threes by Valle. The Monarch lead expanded to 12 at 61-49 after Alexander made a pair of free throws.

Harbor made a late charge, cutting the deficit to 5 at 77-72 after a putback basket by PF Charles Jenkins. But another three by Valle made it 80-72, and a pair of free throws by Valle pushed the lead back into double digits at 82-72 and sealed the win.

For Valley, Valle's 21 points led the way. SF Gemel Coleman had 17 points, including 12 in the first half to help keep his team in the game, plus 7 rebs and 5 steals. Ctr Aaron Clarke had just 4 pts but hauled in a team-high 10 rebs. PF Max Hutchinson also had 4 pts but pulled down 9 boards.
