Citrus 74, San Jose 53

It was widely expected to be the closest of the four quarterfinal games, but instead it quickly turned into a rout as Citrus (29-2) led every step Friday night over San Jose (26-5) at the California Community College state tournament at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.

Citrus scored the game's first four points and led 9-2 early on as SJCC missed 9 of its first 10 shots from the floor. The Owls pushed the lead to double digits at 19-8 after a basket by Ctr Randy Hunter, and to 16 at 26-10 after a lay-up by SF DeAndre Haskins following a steal by SG Jose Rivera. The Owls built a 34-14 lead after a Rivera 3-pointer with about five minutes left in the first half, at which point San Jose had missed 21 of its 25 shot attempts. By halftime, the margin was 21 points at 42-21, at which point the Jaguars were shoooting a meager 19% from the floor (6-for-32).

San Jose got within twelve points at 56-44 midway through the second half, but never got any closer. Citrus pushed the margin back to 21 points at 70-59 when PG Donnel Phifer made a free throw after a steal with exactly five minutes remaining, ending any lingering doubt as to the game's outcome.

For Citrus, PF Keith Thompson had 13 pts and Haskins had 10. Rivera had 9 pts on 3 threes. Ctr Tom Granado had 8 pts and a game-high 11 rebs; Hunter had 8 pts and 8 rebs. Overall, eleven different Owls scored, and the Citrus defense held San Jose to just 29.9% shooting for the game.

For San Jose, PF Steveone Jones came off the bench for 15 pts and SG Shaneel Narayan had 13 pts plus a game-high 5 asts. PG Quincy Hill had 10 pts.
