#4-South seed Saddleback slowed the pace, holding #1-North seed Ohlone to just 43 points on 29% shooting and posting a 57-43 win in the second quarterfinal Friday afternoon at the California Community College state tourney at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
Led by PG Perry Webster, who controlled the tempo of the game and had 8 pts plus 8 asts, and SF Tyler McManaman and Ctr Robert Curtis, who each had 12 pts, Saddleback (27-5) jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the game's first five minutes and led every step of the way.
Webster and SF T.J. Lipold hit 3-pointers to make it 6-0, and McManaman hit a three to make it 10-1 early on. Ohlone (24-5), after missing its first six shots from the floor, finally got a field goal when PF Lavon Gray scored on a putback with 5:16 gone in the game.
Ohlone seemed to stabilize a little after that, cutting the Saddleback lead to three points at 10-7 and trailing by just four points at 18-14 and 20-16 later in the first half.
But Saddleback finished the first half strong, pushing the lead to 10 points at 28-18 after a putback basket by Curtis with 2:28 left. A 3-pointer at the horn by PG DeAndre Myles pushed the lead to 13 points at 34-21 at the break.
In the second half, Ohlone cut the Saddleback lead to seven points several times, but never got any closer. The Renegades were last within seven at 44-37, but then Webster hit a bank shot to make it 46-37. After an Ohlone free throw, Webster fed McManaman for a basket to make it a ten-point game at 48-38. Ohlone later got within eight points at 50-42 after a 3-pointer by SG Ronnie Sawyer with 1:40 left, but then Webster passed to Curtis for a score to make it 52-42. McManaman made a pair of free throws with 1:05 left to make it 54-42 with 1:05 left and seal the win for the Gauchos.
Ctr Reggie Jones led Ohlone with 12 pts. Sawyer had a solid all-around game with 9 pts, 6 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals.
