City College of San Francisco jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and cruised to an easy win in the first quarterfinal of the 2010 state tournament for California Community Colleges Friday afternoon at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
The game was not as close as the final score makes it look as Irvine Valley (26-5) chose an inopportune time to have a bad game. CCSF (27-4) opened a 19-5 lead less than seven minutes into the game, led by 15 points at halftime and held a double-digit lead into the final minutes of the game when IVC finished with a flurry to cut the final margin to six points but never really threatened.
CCSF started out on a 5-0 spurt in the game's opening 1:17, then got a putback basket by Ctr Jonathan Williams and a 3-pointer by SG Bennie Rhodes to make it 10-0 2:16 into the game. Rhodes scored on a putback with just less than three minutes gone to make it 12-0.
Irvine Valley finally got on the board when PG Travis Ballard hit a 3-pointer to make it 12-3, but CCSF pushed the lead out to 14 after baskets by PG Calvin Douglas and Williams made it 19-5 with over 13 minutes still left in the first half. A slam by PF Da'Ron Sims made it a 16-point game at 27-11 with about seven minutes left in the half.
Irvine Valley got within 10 points at 31-21 after a basket by PG Andrew Arnold with just less than two minutes left in the first half, but CCSF got a basket from Sims and a 3-pointer fom PG Daryl Cooper to make it 36-21 at the break.
In the second half, CCSF continued to lead handily most of the way, pushing the margin to 20 points at 59-39 after a one-hander from the lane by Sims with 7:17 left. IVC closed the gap to six points in the final minute of the game, but never got any closer. Two free throws by Cooper pushed the lead back to 10 at 69-59 with 34.1 seconds remaining, sealing the win for CCSF.
Sims came off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 pts on 9-for-13 from the floor. Williams had a double-double with 12 pts and 10 rebs. Rhodes had a strong game with 10 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals. PF Christopher White had 8 pts, 9 rebs and a game-high 6 asts for the Rams.
For Irvine Valley, Ctr Max Carrier had an excellent game with 17 pts, 10 rebs, 2 blocks and 3 steals. SF Joe Eberhard had 13 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts, and PF Travis Fulton had 11 pts, 8 rebs and 4 asts. SG Durrell Norman added 10 pts and 6 rebs.
