The 3-pronged attack of PG Kevin Henderson, SG DeWayne Pettus and SF Aaron Nixon proved too much for the upstart College of the Siskiyous (19-9) as top-seeded San Bernardino Valley (26-4) posted a 78-65 win in the day’s final quarterfinal game. Nixon scored 27 pts to lead all scorers while Henderson and Pettus combined for 35 pts and 10 asts for the Wolverines.
Henderson scored a FG+FT 3-point play and Pettus drained a 3-pt field goal to break a 43-43 tie and send SBVC on a 21-4 run that put them in control of the game. Then Henderson added a jumper and another FG+FT 3-point play to push the lead to 11 at 54-43. A pair of free throws by SF Kenyatta Madison pushed the margin to 13 at 58-45, and Pettus added a pair of free throws to make it 60-45. SBVC led comfortably the rest of the game despite having severe foul trouble among their big men.
Early on, SBVC jumped out to a 10-5 lead on the strength of 8 pts by Nixon only to see COS rally and take an 11-10 lead after a FG+FT 3-point play by PF Olajuwon Jones and a 3-pt FG by PG Dshon Cannon. SBVC then struck back to take a 20-13 lead, but again COS rallied, tying the game at 21 on a basket by SG Daveon Fleming. SBVC pulled out to another lead at 30-23 only to see COS rally and take a 31-30 lead on a steal & basket by Cannon. The lead continued to change hands as SBVC pushed out to a 37-32 lead after a pair of free throws by Nixon following an intentional foul call and a steal & basket by Pettus. But a three by SF Henrik Foster just before halftime cut the margin to 39-37 at intermission.
SBVC won the game, but it wasn’t exactly a display of efficiency on offense and they battled severe foul trouble on their front line. Nixon needed 27 shots to score his 27 pts. Overall, SBVC shot just 38% from the floor. And Henderson had good totals of 17 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts and 4 steals but he shot just 5-for-19 from the floor and committed 8 turnovers. Pettus had a very solid game with 18 pts on 6/12 shooting and 5 asts. On the front line, Ctr Jabbar Young had 4 pts and 9 rebs before fouling out with over 12 minutes left in the game. Foul trouble was a constant theme for SBVC’s big men as PF Rummel Clark and backup Ctr Tommey Posey also fouled out and reserve Ctr Jason Jones had 4 fouls. Finally, James Daniel came off the far end of the bench and though he didn’t score, he did grab 4 rebs and managed to stay on the floor while committing only 1 foul.
For COS, Cannon and Jones each scored 14 pts to lead the way. Jones also had 8 rebs, tying Ctr Terrance Twotwo (11 pts, 8 rebs) for team honors. Cannon dished out a game-high 7 asts. Fleming and Foster each added 11 pts, giving COS five double-digit scorers. But the rest of the Eagles combined for just 4 pts and they committed 22 turnovers.
With the win, SBVC advances to the state semifinals where they will meet the 30-1 San Joaquin Delta Mustangs. The loss finishes the Siskiyous’ season at 19-9.
