Pasadena 79, East LA 63 (women)

PG Desiree Loving scored 23 pts and dished out 7 asts to lead #2 Pasadena to a comeback 79-63 win over visiting #11 East LA Wednesday night in the SCC-North opener for both teams.

Pasadena (12-4, 1-0) rallied from a 14-point first-half deficit, cutting the margin to 6 points at the half. East LA (10-6, 0-1) still led by 5 points when Pasadena went on a 21-4 run to take control of the game, making it 65-53, and PCC led by double digits the rest of the way.

ELAC rode the hot shooting of SG Angelica Trinidad to build the 28-14 first-half lead. Trinidad made one 3-pointer to give East LA a 23-12 lead with 10:38 left in the first half, and made another to make it 26-14 less than a minute later. PG Taylor Smith made a short jumper to make it 28-14 with 9:30 left in the half.

Pasadena cut the deficit to six points at 36-30 at the half, however, scoring the last 7 points of the first half. Then PF Tyler Crockom scored in the opening seconds of the second half to close the gap to four points at 36-32.

East LA still held a 49-44 lead midway through the second half when Pasadena went on the 21-4 run to take control of the game. A blocked shot by PF Brandi DuBose led to a lay-up by SG Joelle Tucker that gave PCC a 50-49 lead. East LA went right back in front on a basket by PF Jocelyne Diaz, but that would be ELAC's last lead of the night.

Loving scored on a driving lay-up with 10:38 left that gave Pasadena a 52-51 lead, and drew a foul on the play that was the 4th for ELAC PG Dioseline Lopez. Loving missed the resulting free throw, but Ctr Kaitlyn Parks grabbed the rebound, and moments later Tucker hit a short jumper to make it 54-51. A 3-pointer by SF Skai Thompson and a short jumper by Loving made it 59-51.

Lopez re-entered the game at that point, but it was too late and Pasadena continued to pull away. Parks scored on a putback with 7:07 left that pushed Pasadena's lead to double digits at 63-53, and hit a short jumper moments later to make it 65-53. Pasadena held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Loving led all scorers with her 23 pts, and she added 5 rebs, 7 asts and 2 steals. Thompson had 14 pts and Parks had 13 pts, 8 rebs and 3 steals. Crockom chipped in with 11 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals.

For East LA, Trinidad came off the bench for a team-high 17 pts that included 5 three-pointers. But nobody else on ELAC reached double figures. Ctr Karina Ortiz had 8 pts, 7 rebs, 2 blocks and 2 steals, and Diaz had 8 pts and 6 rebs. Lopez had just 4 pts but dished out 13 asts, easily game-high, before leaving with an apparent leg injury after running into the 6-4 Parks on a screen in the game's final minutes.
