Antelope Valley 93, Desert 63

SF Donald Williams had 25 pts and SG Nick Bennett came off the bench for 14 pts and 7 asts as #11 Antelope Valley trounced a shorthanded #13 Desert squad, 93-63, in Foothill Conference play Friday night in Lancaster.

Desert (9-6, 1-1) was without standout PG Antoine Davis, who was away from the team for family reasons, and starting Ctr Connor Madden played only a little over a minute before sitting out the rest of the game with the flu. Davis leads the Roardunners in points, rebounds, assists and steals per game, and the 6-10 Madden is easily COD’s tallest player and leads the team in field goal percentage.

But considering how well Antelope Valley (10-7, 1-1) played, shooting 53% from the floor, the Marauders might well have won regardless of who was available for COD.

AVC led wire to wire, getting a 4-0 lead after a pair of sensational slam dunks by Ctr DeWayne Dedmon, the first on an alley-oop pass from PG Rod Singleton, to start the game. Then Williams hit a pair of threes to push the lead to 10-2, and extended the margin to 9 at 16-7 on a driving lay-up. Then Bennett hit 3 straight 3-pointers to push the Marauder lead to 18 points at 27-9, and a basket by PF Charles Cole on a feed from PG Sean Butler to push the AVC lead to 20 points at 29-9 less than 11 minutes into the game.

The first-half lead reached as much as 28 points at 42-14, though Desert cut the deficit to 22 points at 51-29 at the half. And the Roadrunners rallied to within 17 points at 53-36 after a 3-pointer and a lay-up by SF Anthony Gilchrist, the lay-up coming after a steal by PG Nico Matthews.

But Desert never really threatened, and the lead ballooned back beyond 20 points after that brief rally. By the end of the night, ten Marauders had scored, and AVC had no trouble winning despite just two points apiece from arguably two of their best players, Singleton and Ctr Matt Stern.

Williams was particularly outstanding, making 10 of his 13 shots, including 3 threes, and adding 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots. Bennett had an outstanding game with 14 pts on 5-for-8 from the floor, including 4 threes, plus a game-high 7 assists. Butler had 12 pts and SG Jason Logan had 11 pts and 4 asts. Cole added 10 pts.

For Desert, PF Deonte Taylor led the way with 15 pts, 9 rebs, 4 asts and 3 blocked shots. Gilchrist also had 15 pts and added 3 asts and 4 steals. But no other Roadrunner scored in double figures. SG Doug Matkins had 9 pts while PF DeJuan Lewis and Ctr Jonathon Kaker each had 8 pts.
