Juliet Masei scored 16 points and host Antelope Valley (11-7) held Victor Valley (6-10, 0-2) scoreless for nearly the last 5 minutes of the game to win its Foothill Conference opener Wednesday night in Lancaster.
Masei scored 12 points in the first half to help AVC take a 39-29 halftime lead, and the Marauders opened a 15-point lead at 47-32 early in the second half.
But then Victor Valley rallied to close the gap to just 6 points after a free throw and then a short jumper by Elise Daughton. That made it 52-46 with just under 5 minutes to play.
However, those would be the final points for Victor Valley. And Antelope Valley gradually extended the lead back into double digits on a basket by Jennifer Lee and a pair of free throws by Silva Duarte-Ayala. A free throw by Kelli Edwards-Valentine with 14.7 seconds left finished the scoring for AVC.
For AVC, Masei had 3 threes en route to her team-high 16 pts. Ctr Angela Conde had a strong all-around game with 11 pts, 8 rebs, 4 blocks and 5 steals. Edwards-Valentine had 8 pts and a team-high 11 rebs.
For VVC, Veronica Rand sank 4 threes and finished with a game-high 18 pts. PG Olga Esparza had 10 pts and 4 steals. And PF Valerie Delgado had 9 pts and a game-high 17 rebs for the Rams.
