Unbeaten and #1-ranked Mt. San Antonio jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 6:19 and led every step in a 65-45 win over host Long Beach in a South Coast Conference crossover game Friday night.
Mt. San Antonio (25-0) forced 11 LBCC turnovers during that opening stretch, and its defense smothered Long Beach (13-9) for most of the game. Mt. SAC allowed LBCC to shoot just 24% from the floor for the game while forcing 36 turnovers. The Mt. SAC defense held Long Beach to just three field goals in the first half, and led by at least 15 points for virtually all of the second half.
Armani Wiley finally got Long Beach on the board with a pair of free throws with 12:50 left in the first half, and Jessica Njoku scored LBCC's first field goal on a putback moments later to make it 11-4. Long Beach also trailed by six at 15-9 with 9:53 left before halftime.
But then Mt. SAC pulled away, pushing its lead to double digits when Gina Henderson scored on a baseline drive to make it 21-10. A steal & lay-up by Tatyana Calhoun made it 23-10. Mt. SAC led by 14 at halftime at 33-19.
John'ea Thompson scored on a driving lay-up to push Mt. SAC's lead to 15 at 35-20 early in the second half, and Sashanique Youngblood scored about 30 seconds later as Mt. SAC squelched any notion of a Long Beach comeback. The lead reached 30 when Henderson made a pair of free throws to make it 58-28 after Njoku drew a technical foul and fouled out with 8:05 remaining.
Henderson led all scorers with her 14 pts, and Thompson had 10 pts, 4 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. Youngblood had 9 pts, 2 rebs and 5 steals. Joi Mitchell and Aliyah Dickson each scored 8 pts and Priscilla Lopez scored 7 pts.
For Long Beach, Darshana Taafua scored a team-high 10 pts and grabbed a game-high 13 rebs for the double-double, and she also blocked 3 shots. Imani Johnson scored 9 pts and Jasmine Avalos scored 7. Wiley had 5 pts, 3 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals.
