SG Jessica Torres' baseline jumper with 1:09 left broke a 62-all tie and lifted #5 LA City (23-2, 3-1) to a 64-63 win over host #3 Pasadena (23-4, 2-2) in a key South Coast Conference Northern Division game Friday night.
Torres made 10 of 14 shots on the night, and had also broken a 60-60 tie with a jumper with 1:56 left. Pasadena answered that with a basket by PF Easter Faafiti with 1:35 left, but Torres' second tie-breaking shot held up when Faafiti's last-second attempt bounced off the backboard and the rim as the final horn sounded.
Pasadena held the lead most of the game. LA City broke out on top, building an 11-4 lead after a 3-pointer by Torres and leading again by 7 at 13-6 moments later. But then Pasadena went on a 15-2 run, taking a 21-15 advantage midway through the first half, and led by 5 at 33-28 at halftime.
In the second half, Pasadena continued to lead, opening a 7-point advantage early in the half, until LACC tied the game on a basket by Ctr Devan Satchell with 3:20 left that tied the game at 60.
For LACC, SF Ebony White had a tremendous game with 26 pts, 13 rebs, both game-highs, and a team-high 5 asts. Torres, who sat out much of the first half with foul trouble but stayed on the floor even after picking up her fourth foul with over 9 minutes left, added her 23 pts and made her last 5 shots from the floor.
For Pasadena, Faafiti led the way with 24 pts, 10 rebs and 5 steals for the double-double. Ctr Allegra Kohley had 11 pts and SG Melia Basavand had 9, all on threes. PG Kinyada Johnson had just 5 pts but dished out a game-high 8 asts.
