Britany Henderson delivered an absolutely overwhelming performance with 25 pts, 20 rebs and 7 blocked shots, overcoming first-half foul trouble and leadind #15 LA Pierce (21-5, 5-2) to a 65-52 win over visiting Oxnard (8-12, 1-6) Saturday night in Woodland Hills in a WSC-North Division game.
After spending the last half of the first half on the bench with 3 fouls, Henderson scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds during a 22-6 Pierce run to begin the second half that spurred the Brahmas to the win. She ended up grabbing 18 rebounds in the second half alone, and both Oxnard players assigned to guard her ended up fouling out.
But during that first-half stretch when Henderson was on the bench with foul trouble, 5-2 guard Rachelle Tan came through for Oxnard, holding the Brahmas in the game until Henderson returned. Tan scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half after Henderson left the game, including 3 of her game-high 4 threes, allowing Pierce to stay within 2 points at halftime at 29-27.
When the second half began, Henderson was back in the game and the Brahmas were on their way. A three by Kim Rodriguez put Pierce ahead, 30-29. The lead went back and forth for the next couple of minutes until a basket by Henderson put Pierce ahead, 34-33. Then Henderson made a pair of free throws to make it 36-33, and the Brahmas were on their way.
Oxnard made a late run to close the margin to 5 points at 50-45 with just over 5 minutes left, but Pierce then pulled away again. A three by Emmilee Ringelberg, a free throw by Samantha Session and a putback basket by Ringelberg pushed the Pierce lead back to double digits again at 56-45. Oxnard got a three from Awilda Hernandez to cut the margin back to 7 at 59-52, but then Pierce scored the last 6 points of the game to win easily. A free throw by Tan after a technical foul on the Oxnard coaches with 1 minute left, followed by a free throw by Ringelberg (on the original foul call) made it 61-52, and a pair of free throws by Henderson pushed the lead to 11 and clinched the win.
In the first half, Oxnard had led by as many as 4 points at 24-20 after a basket by Victoria Seui. But a three and a short jumper by Tan helped Pierce wipe out that deficit and tie the game at 24. Oxnard then went back in front, 27-24, only to see Tan again tie the game with a three that made it 27-27. Crystal Lopez made two free throws with 6.5 seconds left before halftime, giving Oxnard its 29-27 lead at the break.
Henderson and Tan were the two scorers to reach double figures for Pierce. Session had 8 pts and 9 rebs. And Ringelberg had just 6 pts but pulled down 15 rebs.
For Oxnard, A. Hernandez had 15 pts and 3 asts. Cherelle Hayes added 14 pts and Seui had 11. T. Hernandez had 4 pts and a team-high 9 rebs.
