LA Trade Tech 70, East LA 66

SF Brandon Drayton scored 17 points and SG Sean Terrell added 15 as host LA Trade Tech (9-15, 2-3) topped East Los Angeles (13-13, 1-4), 70-66, in South Coast Conference, North Division action Friday night.

Drayton made 8 of 11 shots from the floor, and Terrell drained a key 3-pointer with 1:04 left as part of a 9-2 Trade Tech run that put the Beavers in control after the game had been tied at 61 with 2:10 remaining.

Early on, Trade Tech dominated play, building a 26-11 lead after a three by SG Ronald Corbitt. But East LA cut that lead to 4 at halftime after a three by SG Arcenio Ramirez made it 30-26.

In the second half, East LA continued to chip away at the Trade Tech lead, tying the game at 36 on a basket by SF Brandon Allen and eventually taking the lead on a basket by Ctr Michael Lai that made it 41-40. Then a three by SF Daniel Vasquez and a steal & Basket by Ramirez gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the game at 46-41.

But then Trade Tech righted itself, helped by the strong play of backup Ctr Tariff Purdom. With East LA leading, 50-47, Purdom scored one basket to cut the lead to 1 at 50-49 and shortly after that scored another to give Trade Tech the lead again at 53-52 with 5:40 left. Then he intercepted a long pass for a steal, starting a play that ended with a basket by Terrell that made it 55-52. The Trade Tech lead grew to 5 at 59-54 after Drayton took a pass from Terrell and scored.

East LA rallied again, tying the game on a basket by Lai with 2:10 left that made it 61-61. But a short jumper by Purdom put Trade Tech back in front, 63-61. East LA had the chance to tie the game when PF Pierre Ysaguirre went to the free throw line, but he made just 1 of 2 free throws to make it 63-62. Then Terrell's three for Trade Tech made it a two-possession game at 66-62 with 1:04 remaining.

East LA still had some time to rally, and drew to within 3 at 66-63 when Ramirez made one of two free throws. But with only 31 seconds remaining, East LA had no choice but to foul. And Trade Tech's Drayton made one of two free throws to make it a two-possession game again at 67-63. And when East LA PG Steve Monreal missed a three, Purdom grabbed the rebound and got the ball to Corbitt, who made two more free throws to put Trade Tech in control. East LA's Vaquez made 3 free throws with less than a second remaining to cut the margin to 4 but Trade Tech was in control after Corbitt's free throws.

Drayton's 17 pts led Trade Tech, and he also had 5 rebs. Terrell had the 15 pts plus 5 rebs and 6 asts. PG J.L. Lewis dished out a game-high 7 assists. And Purdom, finally healthy again after a leg injury, came off the bench to add 8 pts, 7 rebs and 3 blocks.

For East LA, Monreal led all scorers with 18 pts and led the Huskies with 4 asts. Allen had a strong game with 15 pts and a game-high 10 boards. Ramirez added 11 pts on 4-of-6 shooting.

The win keeps Trade Tech's playoff hopes alive as the Beavers improve to 2-3 in the SCC-North. East LA, despite a 13-13 overall record, falls to 1-4.
