Juliet Masei had 17 pts and Tracy Wittebolle posted a double-double as #12 Antelope Valley (16-9, 6-1) took and early lead and let coach John Taylor relax en route to his 300th career win as the Marauders thrashed #12 Chaffey (16-7, 5-2) by 23 points Wednesday night in Lancaster.
This one was supposed to be close, as the teams were tied in the conference standings and in the polls for 12th place in the Southern region. But AVC jumped out to a 5-0 lead and led wire to wire. A 14-0 run in the middle of the first half put the Marauders in control, and they led by double digits the rest of the way.
Wittebolle scored on a putback and Romy Calderon drained a three to start the game for AVC, giving the home team a 5-0 lead. Chaffey was still within 2 points at 13-11 when AVC went on the 14-0 run, starting with threes by Calderon and Masei, which put the Marauders ahead, 27-11. Chaffey never got closer than 11 points after that.
After leading by 13 at 33-20 at the half, AVC began the second half with a 14-6 run to push its advantage to 21 points at 47-26 and put the game away.
Masei had a game-high 17 pts, and also grabbed 8 rebs. Wittebolle had 12 pts, 14 rebs and 4 blocked shots. Other double digit scorers for AVC were Calderon, who had 15 pts, and Juanita Newsom, who had 10 pts and 9 rebs.
Lille Parks led Chaffey with 15 pts. Christina Warren had 12 pts and 7 rebs before fouling out with just over 2 minutes left.
Taylor, who became the winningest coach in AVC womens basketball history earlier this season, now has 156 wins in his career at AVC and 300 wins overall.
