Ten different Ventura players scored as the #9 Pirates (15-9, 4-1) won a key WSC-North matchup Saturday night in Moorpark, 60-51, over the host Raiders (11-13, 4-2).
Ventura led virtually the entire game, but their lead was a slim one until the final seconds of the game. After the teams were tied 2-2, the Pirates got baskets from Misty Alvarado, Kristen Gibbert and Rebecca Kolbeck to take an 8-2 lead. The margin grew to 10 at 23-13 after a baseline jumper by Kolbeck, but Moorpark cut the Ventura lead to 5 at 27-22 at halftime after a three by Sarah Ruiz late in the half.
In the second half, Ventura pushed their lead to 15 at 47-32 with 10:46 left in the game after a steal & basket by Veronica Williams. And the lead grew to 18 at 51-33 with just under 9 minutes left.
But then Moorpark rallied, going on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to 5 at 51-46 with 5:52 remaining. Brittany Maguire sparked the rally with a pair of baskets. A field goal by Brooke Peterson cut the lead to 10 at 51-41, and a three by Katie Morton made it 51-44. Then Maguire made a pair of free throws to make it a 5-point game at 51-46.
Ventura, though, was able to maintain their lead and still held a 7-point edge until Maguire drained a three with 46 seconds left to make it 55-51. That was as close as Moorpark would get though. Michelle Jameson made a free throw to make it 56-51. Then Maguire was called for a charging foul on the other end with 36 seconds left. Then Misty Alvarado scored on a court-length outlet pass from Sandy Perry to make it 58-51 wtih 34 seconds left. After a Moorpark miss, Ventura got the rebound; Kolbeck and McKena Richardson each made a free throw in the final 24 seconds to clinch the win for Ventura.
