Santa Ana 74, Cypress 71 (women: Cypress, 84-45)

SG Terrence Hundley scored 21 pts and SF Danny Cavic added 17 as Santa Ana (8-9, 4-2) held off a late charge by host Cypress (8-11, 1-5) in an Orange Empire Conference contest Friday night.

Santa Ana jumped out to a 20-7 lead early on due to some outstanding long-range shooting. At that point, Santa Ana had made 6 threes in the first 6 minutes of the game. Though they were unable to keep up that pace, the Dons finished the night with 10 threes and shot 55% from the floor for the game.

But after the initial onslaught, Cypress stabilized things and gradually cut into the Santa Ana lead. The Chargers rallied to trail by just 6 at halftime and took a 47-46 lead just over 3 minutes into the second half.

Santa Ana re-established their lead with a 10-2 run that was capped by a basket from Hundley and led 56-49. And as the second half wound down, Santa Ana's lead fluctuated between 3 and 7 points. Cypress' rally was curtailed when both PF Sam Davis and Ctr Greg Mercer picked up their fourth fouls midway through the second half.

But Cypress had another rally left once Davis and Mercer were back in the game. A basket by SF Houstan Downey brought the Chargers to within 3 at 73-70 with 1:30 left in the game. But they could get no closer.

Ctr Nedim Pajevic made 1 of 2 free throws for Santa Ana to give the Dons a 4-point lead with 1 minute left; the shots came after Mercer fouled out of the game. Cypress' Davis made 1 of 2 free throws 13 seconds later when Cavic fouled out to keep it a one-possession game.

And Cypress got their chances to tie the game when Santa Ana's Steven Jenkins was called for traveling with 20.6 seconds left. But two 3-point shots in the final seconds missed. Davis tried the first, and the rebound went out of bounds off Santa Ana with 4.9 seconds to play. The ball went to SG Eric Taylor, and his leaning shot through traffic bounced off the rim.

Hundley led Santa Ana with 21 pts, while Cavic added 17. Pajevic added 12. PF Chris Childress of the Dons pulled down a game-high 10 boards.

For Cypress, Taylor led the way with 21 pts including 3 threes. Davis added 17 pts while SG Javon White came off the bench to add 13 pts (3 threes). Mercer had 8 pts, 8 rebs and 2 blocked shots. PG Brandon Void dished out a game-high 8 asts.

In the women's game, #3 Cypress (17-3, 5-1) jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the early going and cruised to an 84-45 win over Santa Ana (5-10, 1-5).

SF Rosalyn Ommoruyi scored 24 pts and grabbed 15 rebs to lead the way. Ctr Ana Fakatou added 20 pts and 9 rebs while PF Paula Reed had 12 pts and 7 boards. SG Niann Hill came off the bench to add 11 pts and 4 asts.

About the only negative for Cypress was an injury to PG Mia Seagraves, who sprained her left ankle with 9:37 left in the game. At that point, she had 6 pts, 9 asts and 8 steals. And after she left the game, Cypress (already playing without injured PG Brittany Imaku) was down to 6 players.

SF Ahkiah Hunter led Santa Ana with 17 pts and 6 rebs. PG Kelly Chavez had a rough night shooting (1/14) but dished out a team-best 4 asts. SG Melissa Alves came off the bench to score 8 pts including a pair of threes.
