Andrea Bobic continued her amazing shooting, scoring 25 pts including 4 threes, to lead host #4 Canyons (20-5, 5-0) to a 92-78 win over #15 Bakersfield (19-5, 4-1), a win that gives COC sole possession of first place in the WSC-South.
COC led virtually the entire game, and led by double digits from the middle of the first half on. The game was tied 8-8 before Canyons scored the next 8 points to take command. A jumper by Bobic pushed the lead into double figures at 21-10 and a three by Ayana Wrighster pushed the margin to 21 points at 44-23 late in the first half.
At intermission, the margin was 20 at 49-29. Bakersfield closed the gap to 10 points at 87-77 with 1:35 left, but never really threatened Canyons. Leslie Ortiz made 2 free throws and Mariama Wrighster made a three to push the margin back to 15 at 92-77 to end any doubt about the outcome.
Bobic went 9 for 11 from the floor, and also added 7 rebs and 7 asts on the night. This comes just 3 days after her 29-point, 13-rebound performance in a 105-74 win Santa Monica, a game in which she drained 7 threes.
Against Bakersfield, she got plenty of help as well. Melissa Tachias had a double-double with 21 pts and 11 rebs, plus 6 blocked shots and 3 steals. Ortiz also had a double-double with 12 pts and 11 asts. Ayana Wrighster had 14 pts and Facion Edwards had 11 for COC.
For Bakersfield, Amber Williams had an outstanding game with 23 pts (on 9-of-12 shooting) and 9 asts. LaShay Bagsby battled foul trouble in the first half but finished with 21 pts and 9 rebs. Neha Joshi posted a double-double with 13 pts and 10 rebs. And Taylor Abercrombie chipped in with 13 pts. But the Bakersfield bench combined for just 4 points, and Bakersfield committed 23 turnovers (COC had just 11).
