Aubrey Duran had 24 pts and 20 rebs, and Whitney Ligon flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 17 pts, 9 rebs and 7 asts as #7 Santa Ana held off a determined Cypress squad, 83-75, Friday night in OEC action.
Santa Ana jumped out to a 20-0 lead as Cypress missed its first 13 shots from the floor before Brae Butler scored 7:19 into the game. But from that point on, Cypress rallied, cutting the margin to just 6 points at halftime after Butler drained a three at the buzzer to make it 38-32.
Santa Ana began the second half on a 16-4 run to push the lead back to 16 at 52-36, but Cypress again rallied and cut the margin to 7 points at 55-48. With just under 7 minutes left, Cypress got another three from Butler to cut the Santa Ana lead to just 5 points at 66-61.
But that's as close as Cypress would get. They still trailed by just 6 at 75-69 with under a minute left, but by then Butler had fouled out. But then Duran was fouled right after grabbing her 20th rebound of the night, and was fouled. She made the first free throw to make it 76-69. She missed the second, but then Ligon got the rebound, was fouled and made a free throw to make it 77-69. Diane Redfox made 4 free throws in the final minute to help seal the win for Santa Ana.
Duran also had 6 blocked shots in addition to her 20-20 game. Ligon had her 17 points on 6-of-8 shots from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers. Heather Couzens came off the bench to add 14 pts and 7 rebs. Redfox chipped in with 10 pts, including the game-clinching free throws.
For Cypress, Butler led the way with 26 pts and 9 rebs. Corianne Felix added 11 pts and Marissa Bravo had 10. Brandi Thomas, who, like Butler, began the game on the bench but played most of the way, finished with 9 pts and 7 rebs.
