SF James Spencer put on a shooting exhibition, making 11 of 14 shots for 24 points, and #4 LA City (22-2, 2-0 in SCC-North) raced out to an early 15-0 lead and cruised the rest of the way past host Pasadena (10-13, 0-2), 86-72, Wednesday night at Hutto-Patterson gym.
Spencer scored 17 of his points in the first half as LACC shot 64% and led at halftime, 46-29. But he wasn't the only hot hand for the Cubs. Overall, LACC shot 56.5% from the floor and had six scorers with at least 8 points each.
Spencer staked the Cubs to a 2-0 lead in the game's opening seconds, and after SG Dejon Prejean made a jumper to make it 4-0, Spencer scored on a putback to make it 6-0. Then a hook shot by Joseph Taylor made it 8-0. PF Marque Rollin took a pass from PG Terrell Powell and scored to make it 10-0. And then Spencer made a short jumper and a three to make it 15-0.
Meanwhile, Pasadena was having trouble holding onto the ball. The Lancers went 0-for-4 from the floor during their game-opening drought, but also committed 7 turnovers. Finally, PG Hasaan Moody made a jumper to get Pasadena on the board, but by then LACC was in control.
The Cub lead was never less than 13 the rest of the game. A basket by Spencer on a give-and-go with SG Rudy Smith after a steal by Spencer pushed the lead to 20 at 32-12. And a pair of free throws by Ctr Joseph Taylor pushed it even farther, making the score 38-17 after drawing a foul on Pasadena Ctr William Perkins. It was Perkins' 4th foul of the game, sending Pasadena's only player taller than 6-3 to the bench with just over 5 minutes left in the first half.
The LACC lead at halftime was 46-29, and the second half was just more of the same as the lead flucutated between 13 (at 50-37) and 24 (at 80-56) the rest of the say.
In addition to Spencer, Powell (15 pts, 6 asts despite fouling out with 7:22 left)and Prejean (11 pts, 7 rebs, 6 asts) scored in double digits. Smith had 9 pts while Rollin and PF Kenny Butler each had 8. Taylor had just 4 points but had 4 assists, 2 blocks, 3 steals and a game-high 10 rebs.
For Pasadena, SF Harold Cleveland came off the bench and scored 17 pts to lead all scorers. Moody had 15 to lead the starters. SF Jamaal Hall had 11 plus 5 rebs and 3 asts. SG Travis Smith grabbed 6 rebs to lead the Lancers.
