Andrea Bobic had 29 points, including 7 threes, and 13 rebounds while Facion Edwards and Leslie Ortiz also had double-doubles as host #4 Canyons (19-5, 4-0) raced past Santa Monica (10-13, 1-4) Wednesday night in Valencia.
Canyons led wire to wire, going in front on a 3-pointer by Cortney Dunlap 8 seconds into the game and scoring the games first 7 points. The Cougars pushed the lead to double digits after a short jumper by Ortiz made it 19-8. Santa Monica got threes from Ashleigh Osborne and Colleen Hartnett to close the gap to 5 at 19-14, but were never able to overcome the early deficit.
And as the game went on, Canyons gradually pulled away. The lead went back into double digits after Melissa Tachias scored to make it 33-23, and it reached 20 late in the first half at 57-37 after a putback basket by Edwards before Santa Monicas Zedra Slaton scored just before the halftime buzzer to make it 57-39 at the break.
Edwards restored the margin to 20 in the opening seconds of the second half, and from there the only questions were when the lead would reach 30 and when Canyons would reach 100 points. Those both happened at the same time when Dunlap scored on a putback with 2:57 left to make it 100-70.
For Canyons, Bobic led the way but Canyons got several strong performances. Edwards had 18 pts and 11 rebs, and Ortiz had 16 pts, 10 asts and 6 steals. Tachias added 13 pts, 8 rebs and 3 blocks. And Ayana Wrighster came off the bench to contribute 8 pts, 6 rebs and a game-high 7 steals.
For Santa Monica, Slaton had 22 pts and Osborne had 20. Hartnett flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 17 pts, 9 rebs and 8 asts. But Santa Monica got just 4 points from its bench and committed a total of 32 turnovers.
