LA Pierce 64, El Camino 49

SG Daniel St. Hubert had 13 pts and PF Terran Carter had 11 as LA Pierce (8-9) overcame a sluggish start and topped host El Camino (3-12), 64-49, in a non-conference match-up Friday night in Torrance.

El Camino jumped out to a 16-8 lead in the game's first ten minutes, scoring eight straight points after the score had been tied 8-8.

Then Pierce scored the game's next 9 points to take a 17-16 lead on a basket by PF Malcolm Collins on an inbounds play. El Camino went back in front, however, and led, 25-20, after a 3-pointer by SF Wendell Lee.

But Pierce closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 30-27 lead after a 3-pointer by St. Hubert and a free throw by PG Josh Thomas in the last two minutes of the half.

And when the second half started, Pierce picked up right where it left off, putting together a 14-2 run (making it a 24-4 extended run over halftime) to take a 44-29 lead. PG Ever Lopez played a huge role in the second half spurt with a pair of threes sandwiched around a steal & outlet pass that led to a St. Hubert dunk.

El Camino answered with a 10-2 run to close the gap to four points at 46-42 with just less than 9 minutes left after another 3-pointer by Lee.

But then the Warriors went without a basket for more than five minutes, allowing Pierce to pull away once more, this time for good.

A basket by Ctr Michael Aguilar after a steal and a basket by St. Hubert, both with assists by Lopez, made it 50-42. Then a pair of free throws by SF Jeremy White after a steal made it 52-42 with 4:35 left.

El Camino finally got a point on a free throw by Ctr Julian Camper with 3:21 remaining, but Carter drained a 3-pointer to make it 55-42 and then stole the ball at midcourt and took it in for a lay-up to make it 57-42 and end any remaining doubt as to the game's outcome.

St. Hubert finished with 13 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Carter came off the bench for 11 pts plus 8 rebs and 4 steals, and Lopez had 9 pts and a game-high 6 asts. Collins also had 9 pts, 8 of which came in the first half.

Camper led El Camino with 13 pts, and he also had 7 rebs. Lee had 12 pts and SF Isaiah Jenkins had 10 pts plus 4 rebs and 4 asts. PF DeAndre Ingram had 8 pts and a team-best 9 rebs.
