San Bernardino Valley 66, Antelope Valley 51 (women: AVC, 69-47)

SF Aaron Nixon scored 23 of his game-high 36 points in the second half to lead #6 San Bernardino Valley (13-3, 3-0 in conference) to a 15-point win over host #10 Antelope Valley (12-6, 1-2) Wednesday night in Lancaster.

Nixon's outburst enabled SBVC to overcome an early 10-point deficit to post the win and stay atop the Foothill Conference standings. PG Kevin Henderson had a strong game as well with 19 pts, 6 asts, 5 rebs and 4 steals.

Early on, it was all AVC as the Marauders built a 24-14 lead with just over 5 minutes left in the first half. A pair of baskets by PF Tommy Harris and one by SF Glenn Gilliard helped AVC build a 9-3 lead in the first few minutes, and when PG Tyme Hodges entered the game he spurred a run with a steal & layup and a three to make it 23-14. A free throw by SG Joseph Dickson made it 24-14 with just over 5 minutes left before intermission.

But AVC didn't score again the rest of the half, and Nixon helped SBVC rally to trail by just 2 at halftime. PF Rummel Clark started the run with a putback basket, and SF Kenyatta Madison added a pair of free throws to make it 24-18. Then Nixon scored a pair of baskets to make it 24-22 at the break.

When the second half started, SBVC's rally continued. Henderson scored on a layup in traffic to tie the game, and SG Dewayne Pettus scored to give SBVC its first lead since the first minutes of the game. After Gilliard scored on a baseline drive to give AVC one last lead, Nixon made a pair of free throws and a field goal to push SBVC ahead, 30-26.

Though SBVC led the rest of the way, AVC hung tough into the final minutes until Nixon made 4 free throws (2 after an intentional foul by Hodges) and Henderson scored on a putback to give the Wolverines a 12-point lead at 58-46. Henderson then stole the ball and passed to Nixon for one more basket to make it 60-46 and put SBVC in control.

It was the first game for AVC without the injured Wendell White, who is out for the season with a broken bone in his foot. In White's absence, AVC struggled for offense; SF Carlton Clay led the Marauders with just 10 pts. Dickson came off the bench to add 9 and 3 asts. Ctr Brandon Murray had 7 pts, 8 rebs and 5 blocked shots.

In the women's game, Second-ranked Antelope Valley (17-2, 3-0 in conference) jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first 5-1/2 minutes of the game and cruised to an easy win over San Bernardino Valley (1-11, 1-2) Wednesday night in Lancaster.

SF Renita Mitchell nailed 5 threes and scored 17 pts to lead all scorers. Ctr Mariqueta Starling had 7 pts and 11 rebs, and PG Shalonie Hutchinson dished out 8 asts for the winners. Since AVC's lead fluctuated between 20 and 30 for most of the game, many reserves saw considerable action and 10 AVC players scored at least 2 points.

SG Juniqua Burt led SBVC with 12 pts and 6 asts. PG Cristina Gooden added 10 pts and 3 asts. But SBVC was done in by a horrible first half in which they shot 13.5% from the floor (5-for-37) and fell behind, 39-13.
