SF Garrett Nevels scored 17 of his game-high 21 pts in the second half, making all 8 of his shots after the break, as #1-ranked Mt. San Antonio used a pair of 8-0 runs to pull away from host Pasadena for its 14th straight win Friday night.
Mt. SAC (15-1, 2-0) trailed by as many as 7 points in the first half, and trailed, 34-33, early in the second half before the first 8-0 run. That spurt gave the Mounties a 41-34 lead, and later in the half the other 8-0 run, started by a Nevels 3-pointer, pushed the lead to 15 at 59-44, finally putting Mt. SAC in control of the game.
Pasadena (5-10, 1-1), playing its second game on its sparkling new floor at Hutto-Patterson gynmasium, jumped out to an early 13-8 lead after a 3-pointer by PG Jeffrey Dockett and a short jumper by PF Evan Brooks off an assist from Dockett. A blocked shot by Ctr Bryce Clifton resulted in a lay-up by PF Marquise Tolson that pushed the Lancer lead to seven points at 21-14.
Mt. SAC rallied to take a 25-23 lead on a contested 3-pointer by PG Shadrach Earby with 2:40 left in the first half. A 3-pointer by SG John Haywood gave Mt. SAC a 29-26 advantage with about 30 seconds left in the half, but Pasadena Ctr Alex Tatum brought the Lancers within a point with a putback tip-in in the final seconds of the first half.
Pasadena got a 3-pointer from SF Gary Matthews to take a 31-29 lead in the opening seconds of the second half. Mt. SAC answered with baskets by Ctr Christian Mays and PG Hakeem Nance to go back in front, 33-31. Then SG Michael Swanegan Jr. hit a 3-pointer to give Pasadena a 34-33 lead just 1:40 into the second half.
Then came the first of the two 8-0 runs, started when Nevels hit a jumper with just over 18 minutes left. Then Nevels scored off a pass from PF Christian Cooper to make it 37-34. SG Corey Allen and Cooper followed with baskets, both off passes from Earby, to complete the run and make it 41-34 with 16:07 left.
Mt. SAC again led by seven points when the second 8-0 run came, starting with a Nevels 3-pointer off an inbounds play with just under 8 minutes left that made it 54-44. Cooper split two free throws to make it 55-44, and Nevels hit another jumper to push his shooting streak to 7-for-7 in the second half and make it 57-44. Cooper scored on a fast break off a pass from Allen to make it 59-44, and the Mounties led by double digits the rest of the way.
Nevels had the game-high 21 pts, and added 7 rebs, 4 asts, 2 blocks and 6 steals in a strong all-around performance. Allen had 15 pts, 7 rebs and a game-high 7 asts, though he also had an uncharacteristic 9 turnovers. Mays had a double-double with 10 pts and a game-high 11 rebs. Ctr Cliff Sims came off the bench and contributed 7 pts and 9 rebs.
For Pasadena, SG Chris Smith had 12 pts and 8 rebs, both team-highs, and 3 asts coming off the bench. Dockett had 11 pts plus team-bests of 5 asts and 4 steals. Tatum had 9 pts, 7 rebs and 4 blocked shots, and Swanegan, son of the Pasadena head coach, chipped in with 8 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts.
