#9 Fullerton (11-10, 1-1) jumped out to a 20-2 lead in the first 8 minutes and cruised to an unexpectedly easy 77-42 victory over host #12 Irvine Valley (11-7, 0-2) Friday night in Orange Empire Conference action. SF Jessica Duran led the way for the Hornets with 20 pts, 9 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals, while PG Eshell Estrella had a strong game as well with 16 pts, including 4 threes, and 6 asts.
Fullerton led 20-2 early on, saw Irvine Valley cut the margin to 10 points at 23-13, and then pulled away again to lead by 20 at the half. The Hornets then scored the first 4 points of the second half to widen the lead, opening a 31-point advantage at 56-25 on a putback basket by PF Kristen Cabral with about 13 minutes left. From there, the only question was how large Fullertons winning margin would be.
Also for Fullerton, Cabral had a solid performance with 12 pts, 8 rebs and 3 steals. Ctr Amy Richard, who scored the first four points of the night for Fullerton, added 11 pts and 6 rebs. Overall, Fullerton shot 48% from the floor while holding Irvine Valley to just 23%.
For Irvine Valley, PF Nicole Tait came off the bench to score a team-high 12 pts, including 3 threes, and also grabbed 5 rebounds. But she was the only Laser to score in double figures. SF Jenna Schonfeld had 8 pts and 4 steals, while PF Tiffany Smith had 7 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
