PF Jessi Selleh had 21 pts, including 4 threes, and three other Pirates scored in double figures as host #5 Ventura (17-5, 3-0) overcame a huge game from PF Brittoni DeWitt of Allan Hancock (9-12, 1-1) and posted a 73-64 win Wednesday night in WSC-North action.
Allan Hancock led by as many as 11 points early on (at 18-7), thanks largely to DeWitt, and held a 21-11 lead before an 11-0 Ventura run put the Pirates ahead, 22-21, after a free throw by SG Sandy Perry with 5:18 left in the first half. Then the lead went back and forth until Perry scored on a lay-up to give Ventura a 31-30 lead and Selleh was fouled attempting a three with 9.8 seconds left in the first half. She made all three free throws to make it 34-30 at the break.
Ventura held the lead throughout the second half, but never really pulled away from Hancock. The Bulldogs trailed by just a point at 51-50 after DeWitt made her third 3-pointer of the half and still trailed by just 7 points at 62-55 after a three by SG Krista Sua.
But Hancock could never quite overcome the deficit either. And Ventura gradually got some breathing room, pushing the lead to 10 points at 62-52 with just over 5 minutes left after a basket by Ctr Veronica Williams. Hancock never got the margin below 7 points again.
In addition to Selleh, double-figure scorers for Ventura were SG Misty Alvarado, who had 11 pts, 7 rebs and 4 steals, PG Eja Wong, who had 10 pts and Williams, who had 10 pts and 6 rebs. Perry had just 5 pts but dished out a game-high 7 asts.
For Hancock, DeWitt was just outstanding with 34 pts, 17 rebs and 3 asts. Sua added 10 pts and 4 asts while PG Crystal Silva came off the bench to score 9 pts while dishing out 6 asts and grabbing 3 steals. But Hancock was done in by turnovers - 27 of them compared to just 13 for Ventura - and fouls - 24 of them which led to 21 Pirate points from the free throw line compared to just 5 for Hancock.
