PF Facion Edwards had 28 pts and 13 rebs to lead #4 Canyons (16-5) to an 81-71 win over Glendale (13-8, 0-2) Saturday night in the Cougars WSC-South opener in Valencia.
PG Leslie Ortiz added 12 pts and 7 asts, and SG Cortney Dunlap came off the bench to chip in with 11 pts and 3 steals for the Cougars. Ctr Melissa Tachias battled foul trouble but managed 8 pts and 10 rebs.
Glendale led most of the first half, going on a 12-0 run to take a 20-9 lead and holding a 5-point lead at halftime, 46-41. But Canyons rallied in the second half, tying the game at 52 on a basket by Ortiz that started an 8-0 run that put the Cougars ahead for good.
Glendale still trailed by just 6 at 72-66 after a FG+FT 3-point play by SG Mackenna Karasawa with just over 4 minutes left, but then COC put the game away. A basket by Edwards pushed the lead back to 10 at 76-66 with 3:15 left, and a basket by SG Ayana Wrighster on a feed from Tachias pushed the lead to 12 at 78-66. A free throw by Ortiz made it 79-66 on a play on which Karasawa fouled out, ending any remaining doubt about the games outcome.
For Glendale, Ctr Paola Gupilan led the way with 22 pts, and Karasawa added 15. PG Helen Suarez had a strong game off the bench with 9 pts, 9 asts and 4 steals. PF Shantelle Maya-Wright had 6 pts and a team-high 13 rebs. Glendale lost despite shooting 53% from the floor, mainly because they were outrebounded, 46-28, and also because of their 23 turnovers.
